FOREIGN LANGUAGES NEWSLETTER
January 2016 - March 2016

FROM ANGELA CABELLO

Welcome to PASSPORT ,
a Rennert newsletter written especially for teachers and students of foreign languages. Our mission is to bring you fresh ideas that will help keep language teaching exciting and language learning attainable.  This issue contains information on things to know when you are learning a language, a featured-teacher and student piece that highlights Rennert's Spanish program, a "Just-for-Fun" section, and an Open House event to try 3 languages.

I spent Christmas time at home (Spain). For Spaniards, even though the 25th is very important to us, the night of the 24th is a bigger celebration. Please see above a picture of myself enjoying the delicious dinner.

FEATURED TEACHER:
Israel Rodriguez

Israel Rodriguez, originally from Guatemala, came to the United States when he was 17 years old. He went to the University of Miami to study his Master in Theology and spent his last year in Seville, Spain.

What motivated Israel to become a Spanish teacher? It was in Spain when he had his first experience helping students studying abroad to improve their Spanish. He loved the experience and when he moved to NYC, he started his long career as the wonderful teacher he is now.

How did Israel become such an able and popular Spanish teacher?

His students adore him because of  his patience, diversity of activities and materials that offers to  them, his enthusiasm in class and commitment to his students.

What do you like to do in your free time?

One of my favorite activities is doing triathlons (which is swimming, biking and running). It has been my passion for 15 years and I like to motivate people to do it as well and for that reason I became a coach trying to help people to accomplish their dreams to come true.

Learning a language - 10 things you need to know

1. Make realistic, specific goals
You have decided to learn another language. Now what? What do you want to achieve and by when? "Language learning is best when broken down into manageable goals that are achievable over a few months. This is far more motivating and realistic". Set yourself a target of being able to read a newspaper article in the target language without having to look up any words in the dictionary.

2. Remind yourself why you are learning.
It might sound obvious, but recognizing exactly why you want to learn a language is really important. "Motivation is usually the first thing to go, especially among students who are teaching themselves".

3. Focus on exactly what you want to learn.
"The question is not so much about online v offline or app v book. Rather it should be how can we assemble the necessary elements of language for a particular objective, present them in a user-friendly way, and provide a means for students to understand those elements."

2. What is your experience about learning Spanish?

"Studying Spanish has given me the opportunity to travel abroad and study in Costa Rica, Spain and Puerto Rico. I have made a lot of great friends while studying and traveling abroad.
