Teams needed from each school to help lead District-wide September 1st Equity Trainings

Our joint SEA-SPS Partnership Committee is charged with developing a curriculum for all SPS staff to engage in on September 1st. This is a required TRI day for certificated staff, but also a paid day for parapros and SAEOPs. The focus of the day will be on Relationships & Resiliency as well as School Climate, which influence student behavior and discipline.

We would like a 3 person team (including an administrator) from each school to attend a paid three hour training on one of the following dates: August 24, 25, 29. This team will then lead your school-based portion of the September 1 training. The Partnership Committee has requested time at School Leaders' Institute (SLI) in August to present an overview of the day. We have also identified August 24, 25, and 29 as dates to provide 3-hour trainings for building teams.

Please notify Pat Sander ([email protected])  as soon as possible which staff from your building who will be your training team.

New Joint SEA-SPS Assessment Committee makes recommendations to superintendent to limit disruption

We bargained for an assessment committee in our contract last fall, and it has issued its first set of annual recommendations. Click here to view the report.

Chief among its recommendations are to identify guidelines and model schedules that will minimize disruption and to increase technology support. The committee also calls on BLTs to play an active role in deciding whether to use interim assessment; for the District purchase the PARCC K-2 formative assessments as an option for teachers to use; and for a greater investment and emphasis on data literacy by teachers and administrators who seek to use data from assessments.

"There's still a lot more to do," said Andy Russell, 4th grade teacher at Dearborn Park and co-chair of the committee. "It isn't enough to make recommendations. We've got to push to get them adopted and supported by the District as a whole."

SEA's committee members found that building and central office administrators were as concerned as we are about the disruptive and inequitable impacts of testing on student learning. SEA will be adding more members to the committee next year and plan to solicit more input from frontline educators to inform our work going forward.

SICK LEAVE REQUESTS

Members can access the shared leave form on the District website ( www.seattleschools.org).  Go to the Human Resources section to access  "Current Employees" and "Leaves of Absence" to find the form. Forms can be submitted to Monica Menchaca, 206.252.0614 / [email protected], leave department analyst.

From Kristi McQuillan at North Beach Elementary: Kristi has a combination of health issues that have caused extensive time lost at work and has no sick leave left at this point. Any hours you could donate would help her GREATLY. She thanks you for your kind consideration!

From Cheryl (Cherie) Stafford at Transportation: I require a knee replacement and can't wait any longer to have the surgery (scheduled for June 20). I'm afraid the amount of time off the doctor requires for my recovery is beyond the amount of sick leave I have on the books, so am requesting the assistance of my colleagues with some donated sick leave. Thank you all in advance!
