HERO Program Launch
Guy Dees
Asst. Principal for Student Affairs

On Wednesday, January 13th, we will introduce a new program called HERO to our students.  The initial purpose of the program is to assist in the tracking of disciplinary issues with the hope of reducing on-campus violations.  If a student violates a rule, a teacher or administrator can simply scanned the student's ID card and upload it with the violation to the program.  Students will have access to their account.  We are also going to provide parents a portal they can access to view their student's record. Please keep an eye for an email with your log in information.  The next phase will include a positive "Ram Code" reward system.

Gabe Granillo - USAF

Congratulations  to Garces senior Gabe Granillo who, as part of the USAF Delayed Entry Program, has been officially sworn in by the US Air Force as an Airmen Trainee.  He will be sworn in again as an actual Airmen right before he heads to boot camp this summer. The United States Air Force Delay Entry Program (formerly was Ambassador's Program) is a leadership program for high school seniors and trainees waiting to go to boot camp.  He has been participating in the program since the beginning of October and will continue until graduation. The US Air Force is the hardest military branch to be accepted into and Gabe's family credits his Garces education as a major factor in his acceptance. Above is a picture of Gabe from the Air Force JROTC Camp he attended this summer.  Gabe's flight won both top honors of "Honor Flight" and "Warrior Flight" at the camp.
Congrats to C.J. West!

Congratulations  to Garces senior Celeste "C.J." West who has been nominated to the McDonald's  All-American Games. The McDonald's All-American Games consist of the top high school players who play a single exhibition game after the conclusion of the high-school basketball season, in an East vs. West format. The McDonald's All-American Team is the best-known of the American high-school basketball All-American teams. Having the designation of McDonald's All-American instantly brands a player as one of the top high-school players in the United States.  Congratulations on your nomination CJ - we wish you the best of luck during the selection process.

Class of 2017, 2018, 2019 are due March 31st, 2016
Parent PSI hours are due March 31st, 2016

Community Service Requirements

Hours must serve the Garces community (i.e. Swim meets, Gala, Band Show, Christmas on Campus, Special People Day, etc.).
2. Parish/Church
Students are to be serving in a meaningful way that assists a church or parish community.  Serving in a church ministry, assisting in a church fundraiser or assisting with a church service project are all acceptable hours.  Service which occurs while fulfilling a student's Sunday Obligation (Altar Serving, Choir, Eucharistic Minister) will be prorated at a ratio of 2:1 (one hour of service equates to thirty minutes of Parish Community Service). Working with a Parish School (OLPH, OLG, St. Francis, etc.) will count for Parish Hours.
3. Community Service
Non-Profit Community service may only be completed through organizations approved by Garces Memorial High School. Please see the Director of Admin Operations for an updated list of approved organizations.

Forms can be found online on the community service page. Please contact Ashleigh Rossi at [email protected] with questions.

USC Exploration of Architecture Program

The University of Southern California School of Architecture is pleased to announce the 35th year of an exciting opportunity for high school students to explore their interest related to architecture and design: EXPLORATION OF ARCHITECTURE.

Once again, they will offer a two-week certificate program (June 19 - July 3) and a four-week credit program (June 19 - July 16). USC, like many schools of architecture with a five-year professional degree program, requires students to declare architecture as a major upon application, and include architecture courses in the first year of the curriculum. This early commitment to architecture can be daunting to freshmen. They have created the EXPLORATION OF ARCHITECTURE program to inform students and assist them in making academic and career decisions. The program is an excellent opportunity for a student to develop and refine creative problem-solving skills. The design studio is the focus of the program, emphasizing drawing and model building. The studio experience is augmented with lectures, site visits to significant buildings and architectural office tours.

Program details and registration information may be found at the USC Exploration of Architecture web site: http://arch.usc.edu/programs/summer/explore. Please contact the USC School of Architecture with any questions (800) 281-8616 or email, [email protected] .

Message from
Myka Peck
Principal

Dear Parents -

Welcome to 2016!  I want to thank you for all your support and trust during the first semester.  In looking back, we accomplished a lot and I am grateful to all of you who through your actions, gifts, and prayers, helped us to have a great first half.  During the first semester we:

1, Refurbished the Teacher's Lounge (thank you Robert Moseley and donors)

2. Created a Dance Room (thank you Georgia Peck, Tiler Peck and donors)

3. Created a new Project Lead the Way Engineering Lab (thank you IT Director Doug Dill)

4. Added a new sound system to the football field and school gym (thank you Hail Mary Club, Pavletich Electric, Garces ASB, and the Garces Booster Club)

5. Refurbished the Gym Lobby and Restrooms (thank you Hail Mary Club, Jim McMurtrey and Chris Minor).

6.  Added weekly Masses and a Formal Dress Day (thank you Msgr. Stephen Frost and Msgr. Perry Kavookjian)

7.  Created a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan (thank you Bill Rector)

We have a couple of new things already for 2016:

1. Security Guards - the safety and security of our students is of utmost importance and often we have early morning practices and practices/games/events after school.  To assist us, we have hired security guards who will be on campus from 7 AM to 10 PM each evening.  We are grateful to the donors who stepped up to assist us so that we could make this happen at the start of the semester.

2. Pre-Registration Fee - you will be receiving a letter in the mail asking you to pre-register for next year.  The fee is $100 and will be deducted from the annual registration fee.  The purpose of this fee is to assist us with the budgeting process for next year.  To create a balanced budget, we have to know how many students plan to return next year.

3. Soccer Home Games - soccer season upon us and unfortunately so is El Nino.  When Sam Tobias Field is unplayable due to safety and liability issues, we will find a suitable alternate location. We will continue to keep you updated as to field conditions and game locations.  Please check our website and come out and cheer on the soccer teams this season.

4. The Omaha Development Institute - thanks to the Hail Mary Club, the Omaha Development Institute will be here later this month to conduct a school wide assessment and evaluation of the budgeting process, fundraising, and our Catholic identity.   The assessment is a critical component in creating our short term and a long term strategic plan.

5.   HERO Program - we are rolling out this new program to assist us with a positive improvement in how we track, monitor and improve discipline on our campus.

And we have  begun building our wish list as we have a beautiful campus that needs to be maintained and new projects that need to be rolled out.

I am looking forward to successful second semester. My door is always open, please call me or stop by anytime.

May there always be a Garces.

Myka Peck.
