BISHOP'S LETTER TO THE DIOCESE |

Thoughts from Bishop Fitzpatrick after the tragedy in Orlando
It has not been easy to write something after the tragedy in Orlando. The emotions of frustration, anger and sadness merge. As I have pondered and prayed through the past couple of days, I come away with a few thoughts.
As a nation today, the United States is violent and frightened. The culture of violence is deep in our soul. Our nation was formed by slavery and expansionism that displaced (and obliterated) the original people of the land. It continues in our obsession with guns and a jingoistic notion of being "the greatest." All of this masks a fear of being marginalized and powerless. This is driven by a fear that there is not "enough" (wealth, power, life) to go around, and the fear of the other and those who are different. Isn't fear often the cause of sin? I think fear drives our collective sin as a nation. Fear drives individual acts of violence. We just now have the means to do great harm.

Future Leaders in Washington D.C.
Casey Nakamura and Grace Yatsko had an opportunity to connect last week in Washington D.C.
This summer, Casey is an intern for U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (Hawaii). As an intern, Casey will gain firsthand knowledge of how a Senate office operates, engage with constituents, observe the federal legislative process, and develop research skills related to public policy.
Grace was a member of the Hawaii delegation to the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour of Washington D.C. Participants watch history come alive as they explore Washington D.C.'s museums, memorials and monuments. Each state delegation has the opportunity to meet their state's U.S. Representatives and Senators. Participants also gather for National Youth Day sponsored by The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Youth Day attendees learn about the rich history of electric cooperatives and the important role of being an active participant in our democracy.
