Sandia Aerospace Receives TSO Approval for SAI 340 Quattro
Sandia Aerospace, an AEA member company in Albuquerque, New Mexico, received TSO approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for the SAI 340 Quattro. The SAI 340 is a four-in-one unit that provides attitude, altitude, airspeed and slip in an electronic format. "We have delivered a tremendous number of features in the Quattro, especially considering it weighs just half a pound," said Dennis Schmidt, Sandia president. "It's an excellent safety-enhancing addition to a panel's traditional six-pack." According to the company, the Quattro can replace existing vacuum attitude instruments as a minor installation.
For backup, the Quattro has a small, rechargeable lithium battery that can operate for two hours of nominal time and 30 minutes minimal time.  More...

Be Vigilant and Aware of Hotel Scams
Unauthorized travel companies may attempt to solicit housing to you or your company for the 2016 AEA International Convention & Trade Show. Many of these companies are not reputable, and their offers are deceptive and may put you at financial risk. These phony sites are especially hard to detect on mobile devices.  It has come to the AEA's attention that housing companies such as Exhibition Travel Management and Exhibitors Housing Services are claiming to have a relationship with the AEA and are offering discounted hotel rates for the AEA Convention. These companies and others like them are NOT in any way affiliated with the AEA or the Gaylord Palms and should not be used to make hotel reservations. Please be aware, there is only one, official, exclusive housing block for the AEA Convention, and that is directly through the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center.  The hotel does not make phone calls to exhibitors or attendees encouraging you to book with them. The AEA room rate at the Gaylord Palms is $214. If you have received any other communication either via email or telephone, please delete it immediately and ignore any further requests.  Protect yourself and take advantage of the special AEA room rate by making your hotel accommodations via the link on the AEA Convention website.  More...

Industry Commentary: Best Price -- But at What Price?
Joe Braddock, executive vice president of Southeast Aerospace, recently opined on his price-cutting concerns tempting the general aviation avionics industry. He wrote: "More and more, all of us in the aviation industry are seeing companies slashing prices to get business. When business gets slow or uncertain, it's a natural response. When supplies are high and demands are lower than normal, most companies do not have a choice but to do what is needed to keep cash coming in. Being the bottom-dollar price always seems like the easiest way to get people in the door. Besides the 'be careful what you ask for' aspect of being the bottom-dollar price leader, it is a trend that can ultimately create safety issues for the aviation industry. In most industries, when prices bottom out and companies get desperate to make sales, quality and integrity are soon to follow. To put it bluntly, aviation is not the industry for the bottom-dollar effect. Poor, lackluster maintenance and corner-cutting jeopardizes safety."  So what can aircraft operators do to make sure they receive a fair price for a quality part that is safe to install on an aircraft? Braddock offers some answers in Avionics News  More...

Back to Basics: Alterations
Deciding major or minor is the responsibility of the installer -- a responsibility that is challenging for legacy equipment and nearly impossible for new integrated technologies. According to Ric Peri, AEA vice president of government and industry affairs,  the regulations and guidance for determining major and minor are quite clear; however, industry still seems to have disagreements with the regulators on the topic. The most recent disagreement is a fairly common argument. Occasionally, an inspector will argue that the alteration isn't listed in the aircraft specifications; therefore, it must be major. Or the inspector argues the modification is not on part of the type design; therefore, it must be major. Both of these approaches are simply wrong, Peri wrote in this month's Avionics News. More...
