"WHITE COAT NOTES"
to be delivered at CMSRU's
White Coat Ceremony on September 19:
What Will YOU Write?

Student doctors have donned their trademark short white coats for decades, and the White Coat Ceremony is a celebrated rite of passage for new medical students at schools throughout the United States. Aside from the practical need for a plethora of pockets to hold instruments, patient lists, phones, study aids, and more, the short white coat identifies medical students as healers. Although first-year medical students have much to learn, the White Coat Ceremony is a ritual that sets them on the path to graduation day -- they day their names will be followed by the letters MD.

As part of the Promise Campaign, CMSRU invites you write a note that will placed in the pocket of a new student's white coat. During our White Coat Ceremony on September 19, our students will be surprised with these notes of encouragement and support. With a minimum gift of $100 you can write a note to a new medical student -- any student, or the specific student of your choosing. Please click HERE to learn more! The deadline to participate is September 16.

TAKE A SEAT!

Another exciting piece of the Promise Campaign is our "Take a Seat" initiative, in which donors can have their name, or the name of their choosing, placed on one of the chairs in our Auditorium. Seats are available on a first-come-first served basis, so do not delay!

CMSRU Students - and One Special Donor - Make TutorTime a Hit

As the father of two young boys, Brian McCauley knows that the impact of reading with a child goes far beyond academics. Building on this connection was his goal in approaching the librarians at Ferry Avenue Library in Camden. But McCauley quickly learned that the children there needed more, and just like that, TutorTime was born.

Dr. Judy Nadell, a former Rowan University professor who is co-owner and co-founder (with her husband John Langan) of Townsend Press, a Camden County educational publishing company that the addresses the needs of underserved students from kindergarten through college, was drawn to support TutorTime in several ways. After several conversations and one very impactful visit to TutorTime, Dr. Nadell generously agreed to make a financial contribution to TutorTime's work through the summer. She also provided two wonderful workshops for the TutorTime team, one on starting a peer reading program and another on how to establish a family literacy program.

Mentorship in Action:
Edvard Gumbs

Edvard Gumbs, a second-year medical student who hails from Iselin, NJ, felt the benefit of strong mentorship before Cooper medical School of Rowan University ever opened -- long before mentorship was expressed as one of the seven core values integral to the CMSRU mission.

Wellness Update
CMSRU's Wellness Committee is creating new and exciting wellness initiatives for our students, faculty, and staff! One of the first initiatives has been the Walking Club, which gathers to walk through Camden each Friday. The CMSRU community is also eagerly awaiting the completion of our new Wellness Space located on the 4th floor of our medical education building. The space will be the home of various activities such as Yoga, Cross-Fit, and Meditation. We look forward to the opening in early Spring 2015!

Cooper After-school Mentoring Program (CAMP) Connects Camden Teens With CMSRU Students
