Following various initiatives and events for the Architecture Industry which have seen the Middle East become the second-largest of the AIA's 5 international chapters, the AIA Middle East is now introducing its Annual Conference marking its fifth year of formation. Taking Place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, the event will feature  architectural presentations  and debates , as well as a full day program of  guided tours  to outstanding landmark projects of architectural grandeur in the UAE. The Annual Conference also introduces the  AIA Middle East Awards Program for 2015 , to honor works of excellence in architecture by its members and to bring outstanding examples of architecture to public attention. This year's annual AIA Middle East conference will take place on 
November  13th & 14th  on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi at the Sowwah Square Towers.

AIA INTERNATIONAL ELECTION RESULTS
 
The votes have finally been vetted by the AIA's Legal Counsel for the offices of First Vice President/President and Treasurer for the International Region.

Thierry Paret, FAIA was elected as First Vice President for 2016-2017 and President for 2017-2018 and Loay Quota, AIA was elected as Treasurer for 2016-2017. The two former AIA Middle East Chapter Presidents will work with the International Region's board of Directors to further develop the AIA's international initiatives. 

The AIA ME would like to extend its appreciation for its members who supported the election of our board members to the AIA International Region Board

AIA NATIONAL ELECTIONS  RESULTS

Delegates to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) national convention in Atlanta elected Thomas V. Vonier, FAIA, (AIA Continental Europe) 2016 AIA First Vice President/2017 President at AIA. Jennifer Workman, AIA, L. Jane Frederick, FAIA, and Anthony P. Schirripa, FAIA, have been elected to serve as the At-large Director; Stuart L. Coppedge, AIA, has been elected 2016-2017 Treasurer.

Three additional At-large Directors were elected by the Strategic Council on in advance of AIA Convention 2015. They were Thierry Paret, FAIA (AIA Middle East), Donald King, FAIA, and Deepika Padam, AIA





ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING TRADE MISSION: UAE & SAUDI
ARABIA

The United States Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration (ITA), with support  from the American Institute of Architects (AIA)  (http://www.aia.org) and the American Council of  Engineering Companies (ACEC) (http://www.acec.org) is organizing an Architecture and Engineering Services  Trade Mission to the United Arab Emirates & Saudi  Arabia with an optional stop in Qatar.

AROUND THE CHAPTER

AIA ME Chapter Eygpt Launch Event -  Alexandria 

On July 30th, 2015 the AIA ME inaugurated its presence in Egypt, with a presentation at the Library of Alexandria. The AIA ME has expanded from its origins in the UAE to 9 MENA countries over the past 5 years, with Egypt being the home of the most recent extension of the chapter.   

The event was kindly hosted by  Dr. Sahar Hamouda, head of  the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center, and was attended by around 200 guests ranging from academics, architects as well as students.

Dr. Mohamed Awad, architect and Bibliotheca Alexandrina consultant,  gave the welcoming speech, followed by Mr. Habbak, the AIA Me country representative. Mr. Loay Quota, Past President and Regional Director, highlighted the AIA ME and its activities in the MENA countries, through a 45 min. presentation.

 "Star architects show and tell movie" was shown after the break for 50 min followed by open discussion about AIA ME membership, services, and more. Two architects won AIA gifts through a raffle at the end of the conference. 


 

AIA ME Chapter Lebanon Launch Event - Beirut

 

AIA Middle East Chapter officially launched in Lebanonon 29th  May 2015 at the Hilton Beirut Habtoor Rad Hotel  with the presence of professionals from diverse organizations. The guests were practitioners, academics, and professionals from relevant governmental and non-profit organizations, such as Order of Engineers and Architects; Department of Urban Planning; LGBC (Lebanese Green Building Council) president and members; Bureaux de Control and top consulting and management companies. 


 

The event was held to introduce the AIA ME to the architectural community in the country and to discuss possible collaborations and future events. Roger Skaff,  AIA ME Lebonan country representative, presented the AIA and the benefits of becoming a member for individuals as well as the benefits of collaborating with organizations. 

 


 


 
AIA ME Qatar Inaugural Event   


AIA Middle East held their Qatar launch event on Sunday June 14th at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar Foundation's campus.  The event started with WSP/Parsons BrinkerHoff presenting evacuation 

principles for high occupancy buildings which provided attendees with HSW credits.


The fire and life safety presentation was followed by a peek inside the presentation room of 4 star architects, presenting their designs for 425 Park Ave, New York city. This is a fascinating movie featured Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas, Roger & Partners and Zaha Hadid. The launch event was attended by 24 AIA and non AIA members.

 


 


 
AIA ME Jordan Design, Environment & Material Workshop 

 

AIA ME Jordan held a workshop on Design, Environment & Material on Saturday 25 April, 2015. 36 senior students and graduate architects participants, attended three presentations that were followed by a practical workshop. The participants were introduced to new  trendy architectural materials for internal and external use; emerging methods of sustainable heating and lighting; and explored how the indoor environment is affected by choice of interior materials and finishes as well as external environmental factors.


 

The workshshop was conducted jointly Dr. Anne Gharaibeh, Arch. Farouq Yaghmour, and Arch. Hamzah Al Saket.

Learning From Education City

27th - 28th November 2015.  

Qatar Foundation is organizing a conference on education and architecture, focusing on the architecture of Education City in Doha, in collaboration with Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the AIA ME Chapter. The conference will be held on  November 27th and 28th , at HBKU Student Center in Qatar. Internationally acclaimed architects and thinkers will be speaking at the conference such as Rem Koolaas, Victor Legorreta, Nezar Al Sayyad, Reinhold Martin, Adrian Lahoud amongst many others.
