Child Behavior Disorders

All children exhibit unwanted behaviors sometimes, and some may have temporary behavior problems due to stress. For example, the birth of a sibling, a divorce, or a death in the family may cause a child to act out.

However, behavior disorders are more serious. They involve a pattern of hostile, aggressive, or disruptive behaviors for more than 6 months. Visit Medline to learn about some of the common warning signs of behavioral problems found in young children, preteens, and teenagers including symptoms, specific conditions, treatments and therapies, latest news, and more.

Seven Tips for Positive Behavior

Positive behavior begins and ends with relationships-not with  rules.

While classroom/program rules can provide structure, creating an environment with meaningful connections between staff and youth creates a culture where positive behavior is part of the ongoing learning and development. National Afterschool Association's Talk Tuesday resources cover a wide range of topics, all providing terrific information you can use for staff development!

Preventing Childhood Obesity
Kids face many challenges as they grow up, including preventing childhood obesity, which can boost their risk of contracting serious diseases in adulthood. Obesity rates have nearly tripled among youth over the past three decades. Kids won't be able to tackle this problem on their own. Fortunately, there is much that families and communities can do to help reduce the risk including:
  • Avoiding high-calorie foods that are low in nutritional value.
  • Making fruits and vegetables part of every meal.
  • Checking the Nutrition Facts Label to compare foods.
  • Enjoying smaller portions of food both at home and at restaurants.
  • Substituting water or low-fat milk for sweetened beverages.
