NYCOMEC 15th Annual Research Poster Competition - Call for Posters

Submissions are now being accepted for  Best Experimental Research and  Best Case Presentation in the NYCOMEC 15th Annual Research Poster Competition, which will be held May 19, 2016, in conjunction with NYCOMEC's Grand Rounds. All trainees from NYCOMEC member institutions are invited to participate. Deadline for submission is April 8, 2016. Please click here to register and for the competition rules and requirements

NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series: 
Opportunities for Scholarly Activity 

Our new webinar series offers unique opportunities to faculty who wish to participate in scholarly activities. Interested speakers conduct a 30-minute presentation on a subject of their choice. Topics should pertain to osteopathic medicine, but are not limited to osteopathic practices and principles.  

The webinar series is scheduled every other Wednesday from 12:00 noon to 12:30 pm. Dates to present are available, but are quickly filling up.   To schedule a presentation or for more information, contact Lynn Mark, D.O. via email or at (516) 686-3950.  
NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine Co-Sponsor Faculty Development Program

The faculty development program titled Concussions, co-sponsored by NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine, will take place on   Wednesday, April 6, 2016,   from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Rockefeller Auditorium, Old Westbury Campus. 

The program targets primary care and sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers. It anticipates being approved for 4.5 AOA category 1A CME credits for physicians, 4.5 BOC category A CEU credits for athletic trainers, and 4.5 NYS Physical Therapy Continuing Education credits.

NYITCOM Hosts Hospital Fair

On February 19th, the NYITCOM Office of Academic Affairs hosted a Clerkship Fair, where first and second year osteopathic medical students had opportunities to discuss residency training options with hospital staff and trainees. 


In addition to NYCO MEC representing all of our member institutions' programs at the event, the following hospitals were present: Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, Coney Island Hospital, Flushing Hospital Medical Center,   Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Maimonides Medical Center,  Nassau University Medical Center, NYU Hospitals Center, Peconic Bay Medical Center Plainview Hospital, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Sisters Charity Hospital, South Nassau Communities Hospital, St. Barnabas Hospital, The Institute for Family Health, and Wychoff Heights Medical Center.

Members for Osteopathic Medical Education and VA Academic Affiliations Task Force Needed

AACOM is seeking individuals interested in serving on a task force that will provide information and guidance on ways in which the osteopathic medical education community can expand and strengthen academic affiliations with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). 

Letters of interest need to be submitted via email. The deadline is Monday, February 29 , 2016

ACGME Commits Funding for Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments

On February 16, 2016, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments, a four-year initiative designed to promote transformative improvement within the clinical learning environments of ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions in which resident and fellow physicians pursue their formal clinical training in a specialty or subspecialty. The ACGME will provide funding through a competitive award process. Up to eight Sponsoring Institutions will be selected to receive awards of up to $75,000 per year over four years, with the expectation that each will provide a 1:1 match of those funds. The first of its kind for the ACGME, the initiative aims to enhance and elevate graduate medical education and prepare physicians for the future of health care. To read more please click here.

South Nassau Communities Hospital will hold on Friday, March 11, 2016, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., its 3rd Annual Clinical Research Day in the hospital's Conference Center. Numerous lectures, a Poster Competition, and a Panel Discussion are part of the agenda. Dr. Kenneth Steier Appointed to Board of Catskill Hudson Health Center

Kenneth Steier, D.O., M.P.H, M.B.A., founding Dean and Professor, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, Middletown Campus, has been appointed Board Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee for the Catskill Hudson Area Health Education Center (AHEC).
