A Message from Andrea
All in a Day

Schools are some of the most dynamic, complex, and exciting social systems. In schools, interactions, learning, solving problems, and living day to day occur between all age groups from babies to seniors. While most of what we do in a school focuses on the academics, it is the social environment that makes learning happen. At Schechter, knowing and nurturing the entire child is what we do.

When I think about the number of interactions that take place on any given day I am in awe. Here is a glance into the ways we nurture our entire community.

  • An EC teacher shares an idea to involve the entire school community in an activity.
  • Two students sit on benches, open their books, and share a quiet smile.
  • Parents come in to express their thoughts and help improve our program.
  • Students are greeted in the morning by a teacher who inquires about last night's game.
  • Emails fly back and forth to bring in opportunities that connect our oldest students with opportunities in the larger community.
  • A student helps the Head of School bring in the challot and shares about his championship on the ice.
  • A parent at ReLiSH thanks our Musician-in-Residence for another beautiful morning together.
  • The Rabbi shares his thoughts about this week's Parasha with students, parents, and faculty members.
  • A teacher checks in with a student about the day before.
  • The nurse gives some ice and a kind smile to a student who needs a quiet moment.
  • Staff in the front office greet visitors with a smile and answer questions about lunch.
  • Two parents share a glance watching their two children sit and sing together.

When we come together in community, we raise each other up and reflect our values in the most authentic ways. These are just a few moments from one morning; our students are nurtured through these daily interactions each day.

Shabbat Shalom,
Andrea

2nd Graders Ask: What is my connection to Israel?
In a multi-media presentation for parents and friends this past week, students in second grade answered the question, What is my connection to Israel?  To prepare for the presentation, the students researched the many connections between the Hartford community and Israel and also general information about the State of Israel.

The program began with a special performance of Israeli dances, songs and a play. The play explained why the flag of Israel is blue and white has two stripes and a magen david

Next, everyone proceeded to the cafeteria for a poster board exhibition of Israeli culture and symbols  such as popular Israeli food, the Kibbutz, the symbol of Israel, the Israeli national anthem Ha Tikvah, the importance of the Hebrew language, and the significance of the Kotel, the western wall in Jerusalem.

The program concluded with Israeli cuisine including falafel, Israeli coffee and tea, and of course chocolate  Israeli treats.

"For me, it was wonderful to see how much this Israel program connects us to the core value of the school; chochma -wisdom and klal-Yisrael - community," said second grade teacher Ziva Kovner.

100 Days of School
Last Friday marked the 100th day of school. In observance of this milestone day, the Kindergarten class displayed their special 100th Day creations in the 100 Day Museum. Each child created a display for 100 items and proudly explained to visitors how they got the idea for their project and how they created it. From sea shells to stickers to photos, crayons, hearts and M&Ms, their creativity and pride was evident for all to see.

Grades 3, 4, and 5 Go Back in Time at CT Historical Society
On Tuesday, students in grades 3, 4 and 5 visited the Connecticut Historical Society to participate in three different learning programs.

The third grade students took part in the  This Is Connecticut  program which focused on everything Connecticut, from famous people to things made in the state. Students distinguished real nutmeg from wooden carved models, worked on an assembly line creating mess kits for the army, watched commercials from the 1950's and used a large map and map key to identify the three original colonial regions in Connecticut- Saybrook, New Haven, and Hartford. "I liked comparing the 1950s commercials with the ones today," said Alex Patt. Eli Gold commented, "Working on the assembly line would be fun for a short amount of time but would get boring fast." Lily Temkin said "It interesting that factories were close to the water since the water helped power the machines like the lathe on display."

Fourth graders learned about The Legend of the Charter Oak. They re-enacted the signing of the Connecticut Charter between Governor Winthrop and King James and then the subsequent hiding of the charter for safe keeping. Miriam Newman and Abigail Gordon agreed, "This was a good way to learn history, by acting it out." "I really liked getting dressed up in the costumes," said  Cooper Govoni-Raich and Halaylah Schechtman.  Ava Leshem said, "It was cool to see why and how the people hid the document."

The fifth grade had the opportunity to explore Connecticut's executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government and discover who makes the rules in Connecticut. To better understand the role of each branch, the students elected a governor from among their classmates, debated a bill, and held a mock trial. Sal Katz said, "It was an enjoyable experience, very innovative. I enjoyed being part of the election." Sal was elected class governor by his classmates. Alyssa Temkin said, "It was really cool pretending we were voting because normally we can't." Through movement, improvisation, role-playing, and active participation, the students learned the purpose of rules and laws, explored the separation of powers, and discovered the rights and responsibilities of individuals. Maya Patt liked that the program it was interactive and that they got to participate in a mock trial.

Early Childhood and Kindergarten Rock!!
Students in Early Childhood 2 through Kindergarten took part in a wonderful rockin' presentation this week. Professional drummer Bob Bloom, got everyone rockin' to the beat with a variety of percussion instruments including egg shakers, castanets, and bongo drums. Students also danced with colorful scarves. The students learned about keeping rhythm, tempo, and differentiated between loud and soft sounds.

This program was a fun and education hands-on experience for the EC students who are currently studying music and movement. EC 3 students are engaged in a long-term project on the topic of dance and movement. The EC 4 students have recently begun building drum sets in their block area.  "It was a joyous morning to see the children and our faculty engaged in this musical performance. We didn't want it to end!" said Early Childhood Director Michelle Fontaine. "We look forward to continuing to foster this passion for percussion in our classroom music centers."

This performance was made possible by the generosity of the Schechter Parent Association.

Mishloach Manot - Purim Basket Fundraiser
Purim is just 4 weeks away and the PA needs your help. The Purim basket fundraiser is the Schechter PA's only fundraiser for this school year. There are multiple ways you can support and be involved:
  • Participate and send Purim greetings to friends, teachers, and others in the Schechter school community. The deadline to place orders is Friday March 18.
  • Help pack Purim baskets on Tuesday, March 22 in the auditorium. Packing 450 baskets is easy when there is a large turnout of volunteers. We start at 8:30 am and usually end by 11:30 am, so any amount of time you can help during those hours is great.
  • Deliver baskets to community members outside the school. Routes will be delivered on Thursday, March 24 and usually consist of 10-12 houses that are in close proximity. They can be delivered anytime during the day, at your convenience, and baskets can be picked up from school Wednesday afternoon, March 23 or Thursday morning, March 24 by 10:00 am.
  • Contact Leah Berson at [email protected] and let her know how you can help.
This is a wonderful project and a great opportunity to volunteer. All money raised from this fundraiser will be used for enrichment programs, supplies, and projects that will directly benefit Schechter students!
