THE POWERFUL GIFT OF MUSIC

Every December our singers have the opportunity to sing across the city at tree lighting ceremonies and holiday events. Recently, one special performance was at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Our Central Intermediate Advanced choir performance was broadcast throughout the hospital to those ill, their families and the staff tending to their needs. We were reminded by a doctor that singing and music is a healing arts just like medicine. It was a special moment when our young singers experienced how powerful their voices can be.

At BCC we believe teaching our singers to use their voices together in harmony is one way we can begin healing the many divides our society faces. Each individual voice is celebrated, but each student learns they can create beautiful music by working together - no matter the differences. This lesson represents the community BCC envisions for all of Boston and the world.

During this time of year, we hope you celebrate your family's traditions with peace and joy and recognize the diverse richness your neighbors, friends and colleagues bring.

Happy Holidays!

MACY'S TREE LIGHTING

BCC has been singing at the Macy's tree lighting for over five years in Boston's Downtown Crossing. The day after Thanksgiving, singers, staff and families bundled up and gave shoppers and friends a joyous treat.   Click here to see a short video of our Central Intermediate Choir perform.

GIVE WHAT YOU GOT

Our friends at Catching Joy invited our South Boston Training Choir based at the Perry School to sing at the Prudential Center. Catching Joy promotes volunteerism and was started by a BCC singer and his mom. Their motto is "You got it, give it."  We can't agree more. Click here to get a taste of our singers' voices.

BLINK! A LIGHT & SOUND EXTRAVAGANZA

BCC's Premier Choir had the opportunity to join Governor Charlie Baker, his wife, and Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, to light the tree at historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace as part of the local CBS WBZ-TV, Channel 4 light and sound extravaganza TV show. BCC FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: THE KARIM FAMILY
Hello BCC community! We are Team Karim - Shah and Samina Karim, and our kids: daughter Sarina (15), son Arman (12), and daughter Safiya (9). We're new to BCC this year; Sarina is part of the Concert Choir and Safiya sings with the West End House Training Choir.

We are both originally Bangladeshi but grew up elsewhere. Shah lived for most of his childhood in Indonesia, and was surrounded by a diverse community both at the international school that he attended as well as through exposure to the United Nations where his father worked. When she was young, Samina's family immigrated to the US when her father pursued his PhD here. They lived for years in a university's graduate student housing that was filled with families from many different countries.

Currently, we live in the northern suburbs of Boston. Though we love our town and have friends of different nationalities, we are in a much more homogenous community than the ones that either of us grew up in. We became more aware of this five years ago when Arman (who was then 7) said something that caught us off guard; he made the innocent observation to Samina that "both of my grandmothers have an accent but you and I don't". We realized then that he did not realize that we have an accent also - ours is an American accent - and one that is of the northeastern flavor! This simple event led to various discussions, and we felt our kids were not getting the exposure that we wanted them to have to greater diversity in race, ethnicity, culture, religion, and socio-economic background.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS SUPPORTS BCC
Boston Children's Chorus (BCC) is a proud recipient of an Art Works award of $35,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in support of BCC's preeminent high school age choirs, Young Men's Ensemble (YME) and Premier Choir (PC).

In its first 50 years, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction, the only arts funder in the nation to do so. On December 8, 2015, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including an Art Works award of $35,000 to BCC. The Art Works category supports the creation of work and presentation of both new and existing work, lifelong learning in the arts, and public engagement with the arts through 13 arts disciplines or fields.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "The arts are part of our everyday lives - no matter who you are or where you live - they have the power to transform individuals, spark economic vibrancy in communities, and transcend the boundaries across diverse sectors of society. Supporting projects like the one from Boston Children's Chorus offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day."   Click here to read more.

WISHING YOU PEACE AND JOY.
WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR ALL YOU DO.
As the year ends, we are grateful for all the support our parents, board members, donors and friends provide. Without your goodwill, patronage and enthusiasm none of our many performances, rehearsals or singers' moments of joy like the one above would be possible.

We appreciate you considering supporting BCC with an end-of-year gift.  With your support, we will continue to bring artistic excellence and meaningful conversations that build Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's vision for a "beloved community" in 2016.

We wish you a peaceful and joyous holiday!
