Out at the Game, Triton Softball

Join the LGBT Resource Center for Out at the Game - UC San Diego Triton Softball vs. Chico State. We'll be going out to the softball game and UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics will be recognizing Shaun Travers as the honorary coach before the 3:00 p.m. game! We will gather in the stands for drinks, peanuts and Cracker Jack! Come out with all of your Triton LGBT pride and support the UC San Diego Tritons as they take on Chico State!

	Queer Afrofuturism March 3rd, 2016 \| 5-7pm Join us with speaker Nana Fofie as we come together to hold space for radical and transformative black love and healing to (re)imagine the possibilities for queer, black futures that no longer allow our existences to be subject to state-sanctioned violence and disposability. This is a closed space for black, queer and/or trans-identified folks.
	24-Hour Study Jam March 13th-March 14th, 2016 During finals week, the LGBT Resource Center will be open for a 24-hour period, beginning on Sunday and carrying over until Monday.
	Community Call for Art/Logo for Out & Proud Week Calling all artists! This year's Out & Proud week's theme is "Beyond The Rainbow: More Than Single Issue Lives" and we're looking to showcase art created by our community. We're taking submissions for the Logo for Out & Proud Week. This will be featured in our bookmarks, buttons, and Out and Proud Week marketing. To submit send digital file to mpgomez@ucsd.edu, include your name, contact information, and a short artist statement by April 1st.
	UC San Diego's Out and Proud Week Call for Programs Submission Deadline: Friday April 1st Out and Proud Week Takes Place April 18-22, 2016 Out and Proud Week presents the largest opportunity for community visibility on the UC San Diego campus. It is a week-long group celebration and private reflection on the achievements of LGBT-identified students, staff, and faculty and our allies. It is also a time for public awareness and discussion of current LGBT issues on the state and national levels. Please submit program proposal to be listed in our Out and Proud Week Calendar. 	QTPOC Wellness Wednesdays 12-1pm \| LGBT Resource Center Join us to be in community; Each week we have a different activity! These activities are specifically designed for queer and trans people of color and as such it is a closed space. They range from self-care projects to group discussions about important subjects.
	Friday Funday 2pm \| LGBT Resource Center Friday Fundays are happening every week this quarter! The activities vary by week, and it's sure to be a fun and totally relaxing way to spend the end of a week of midterms. There will also be snacks and tea and awesome people, so come check it out!
	Food for Thought Mondays \| 1pm \| LGBTRC UC San Diego's LGBT Resource Center is excited to continue its ongoing series of weekly conversations regarding important topics in our community. "Food For Thought" creates space for our community to explore dialogue, deepen understanding and engage with current issues. Free snacks, too!
	LGBT RC Open for Submissions! Interested in displaying your art at the LGBT Resource Center? We're open to any medium, from paintings, doodles, prints, poetry, stories, zines, comics, film, animation, music, to 3-D art pieces. Faculty Spotlight

Amy Adler

Visual Arts Professor

Professor Amy Adler's life story is infused with art; she attended the High School of Music and Art in New York, and received both a BA and a master's degree in art.

"I often encounter students are torn between being an artist and other expectations their parents might have of them (like being an engineer)," she says. "In advising them I never pretend it isn't a tough choice but I also feel like it isn't really a choice at all. It is something you sort of have to do. For me there was no other option."

Professor Adler is part of the LGBTQ community on campus, a proud mentor, and part of our Out List of faculty. She enjoys working with the students she mentors, and finds that art sometimes provides a way for students to express themselves that they can't find anywhere else. Her own identities manifest in her work as well.

"Sometimes it's important to get intensely personal," she says. "There's power and vulnerability."

Professor Adler's work has been featured various different museums, including the museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Aspen Art Museum, The UCLA Hammer Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. These days, she's working on a new project, a short film called Tearjerker. It is about a trans guy who, because he has been regularly taking testosterone, has lost his ability to cry. It touches on his difficult feelings regarding his mother, who's suffering from Alzheimer's, and his ex-girlfriend.

Professor Adler's advice to young LGBTQ students is to "be fearless. You have a unique and compelling point of view... . People need and want to hear new voices with stories that haven't yet been told."

	Race, Privilege, and Immigration in the U.S. Feb. 25th, 2016 \| 5-7pm Price Center East Ballroom Jose Antonio Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and filmmaker, the founder of Define American, a non-profit organization that seeks to elevate the conversation around immigration and citizenship in America. He is the founder and editor of #EmergingUS, a digital magazine focusing on race, immigration, and identity in a multicultural America. In 2015, MTV aired White People, a television special he produced and directed on what it means to be young and white in contemporary America.
	WiiFit Party March 3rd, 2016 \| 4-7pm Cross-Cultural Center As part of the Cross-Cultural Center's Winter Wellness Series, come hang out, chill before finals, and play! Entertainment abounds - there will be fun board games, cool people, and a WiiFit Party! Light refreshments will be provided.
	Forks Over Knives Film Screening March 28th, 2016 \| 2-4pm Black Resource Center This thought-provoking film screening, hosted by BRC intern Refilwe, will show Forks Over Knives and use it as a starting point to start discussing food history and industry. It will delve into critical analysis of various food industries and the real effect of certain foods on bodies. This is the first part in a longer series connecting food and environment with social justice work more broadly.
	Crafts Day at the CCC March 10th, 2016 \| 12-3pm \| Cross Cultural Center Come to the Cross Cultural Center to take a break from work or school. Take home what you create, whether it is a picture frame, wooden box, canvas, or anything else you choose to make! All supplies will be provided to you, and everyone is welcome to join in! 	CalFresh Eligibility Pre-Screening Workshops Feb. 25th, 2016 \| 3:30-5:30pm Feb 26th, 2016 \| 11am-1pm Red Shoe Room, Price Center West Triton Food Pantry is hosting pre-screenings to help out students who are struggling financially, and determine whether students are eligible to apply for food benefits. The Triton Food Pantry is a discrete service offered to undergraduate and graduate students to ensure that no student should skip meals and sacrifice their health to pay for other expenses.

	Summer Internship at API Equality Deadline: Mar. 4th, 2016 Do you want to work with LGBTQ API communities? Do you have a commitment to social justice? Do you want to learn concrete community organizing skills? API Equality - Northern California is an organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area, working at the intersections of LGBTQ and Asian and Pacific Islander identity. 	Queer and/or Trans People of Color Conference April 29th-May 1st \| UC Berkeley Application Deadline: Feb. 24th, 2016 The Queer and/or Trans People of Color Conference started at Cal by founders who believed that the struggles and voices of Queer People of Color (QPOC) needed to be shared in a safe and loving space. It's the hope to create a space where Queer and Trans communities of color are able to share knowledge, engage in critical dialogue, and celebrate our lived experiences. 	Call for Student Commencement Speakers Deadline: March 18th, 2016 The university is looking for one student to give an inspiration message to fellow graduates at commencement! All graduating undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate. The speech can be up to five minutes long, and should be on the event's them, Service to the Community and the World. To apply, you need to fill out the All-Campus Commencement Student Speaker Application.
	PFLAG Scholarships Deadline: March 15th, 2016 PFLAG is offering scholarships to all LGBT students, high school, undergraduate, and grad students. Scholarships are awarded based on a well-written application essay, demonstrated financial need, a history of strong academic achievement. Note that the application calls for a letter of recommendation in addition to the form, school transcript and essay. Application available here.
	Student Satisfaction Survey Jan. 11th - Mar. 11th Fill out the student satisfaction survey! Lesbian Body Image Survey The Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is doing a study on lesbian attitudes & feelings about your own body,gender identity and gender expression. Young Women's Discussion Group Third Tuesday of each month 3909 Centre Street, San Diego, CA 92103 This group is aimed at young women ages 18-30. We will discuss issues relevant such as politics, academics, careers, relationships, social media, pop culture, activism and ways to be involved in the LGBT community. We hope to provide a safe and comfortable place to meet and share experiences as members of the LGBT community. It meets in The LGBT Center's library.	New Free App to Find LGBT Roommates: TUTUroomii A San Diego team recently launched a new iOS app called TUTUroomii. This app is designed to help LGBTQ+ young people and allies find ideal roommates in their own community. This app is available in the App Store. Survey of LGBTQ Military Personnel A doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma is writing a dissertation on the identity process of LGBTQ people who have served in the U.S. military. They're interested in reaching LGBTQ U.S. military personnel, and heterosexual/cisgender personnel who had a personal or professional relationship with an LGBTQ military service person (someone to whom an LGBTQ service member disclosed their sexual or gender identity).
