Canine Thymoma

Thymoma, a tumor originating from the thymic epithelium, represents the second most common cranial mediastinal tumor in dogs, although it is an uncommon disease in general. 1-3  Even though the thymus is primarily active during puppyhood, thymomas are typically diagnosed in older medium to large breed dogs and Labrador and golden retrievers were overrepresented in a recent study. 1,2  A clear sex predisposition has not been documented, nor have predisposing or etiologic factors.

Innogenics - Genomic Profiling for Pets: What information can it provide?
At its core, cancer is a genetic disease. Unregulated growth, inappropriate growth signals, blunted or absent response to "death" signals-all of these characteristics are regulated by genes.  For this reason, the promise of genomics in oncology is huge. The expectation of improved diagnostics, prognostics and therapeutics are shared by patients and oncologists alike.

Gene expression analysis is widely used in human oncology.

Addie plays hard for an 11-year-old greater Swiss mountain dog - she will occasionally ignore her advanced years to hurl her 37-kilogram body at an unwitting house guest in greeting. But she carries a mysterious burden: when she was 18 months old, she started licking her front legs aggressively enough to wear off patches of fur and draw blood.

Study asks if dogs can live longer
How long do dogs live? I think we can all agree that it's not nearly long enough. Canine lifespans vary from as short as 6 years for certain giant breeds to an astounding 20-plus years for some tiny dogs. Owners of small and medium-size dogs can generally expect their companions to live 10 to 15 years.
