Jean Hayward, M.D.
 is a pediatric  neurologist at Kaiser Permanente, O akland and serves as the head of the Northern California Child Neurology Group at Kaiser and Co-Medical Director of the Neurofibromatosis Clinic.  More than half of her pediatric patients in the clinic and hospital are affected by epilepsy. Other clinical interests of hers include: concussion care, genetic disorders and metabolic conditions.

"I enjoy working with children and their families. The challenge of each child's differences makes each day exciting."

Dr. Hayward attended medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She went on to complete her Residency at the University of California, San Francisco and Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. Dr. Hayward has been a pediatric neurologist at Kaiser Permanente, Oakland since 1989. Since her arrival at Kaiser, she has worked to increase the number of pediatric neurologists in the Northern California Kaiser system. Initially Dr. Hayward was one of two pediatric neurologists--now there are thirteen!

Now that their three sons are grown up, Dr. Hayward and her husband Jim take advantage of more free time to enjoy traveling to visit family both near and far. Dr. Hayward, a life-long runner, has recently re-entered sculling and rowing with a college teammate.  She is looking forward to Masters racing!

Dr. Jean Hayward joined the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California in 2014. She brings years of great experience and knowledge. We look forward to continuing to learn from Dr. Hayward as we work to 
extend our outreach in our epilepsy community.

Tips on the Go!
  • Air Travel: talk to your health care provider
    (time zone changes, sleep deprivation, long delays or travel times)
  • Accommodations for special needs (such as diet, mobility, places to recover after a seizure)
  • Travel with someone who knows about your seizures & what to do if problems arise.
  • Consider accessible transportation. 
  • Have a 'Seizure Response Plan' available at all times. 
  • Manage your seizure triggers. 
  • Research healthcare resources at your destination.
