Lyon Families,

We are excited to offer you a monthly newsletter with celebrations, upcoming events, and curriculum updates for Lyon Elementary.

Updates from Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Brown

Welcome 2016!  Mrs. Brown and myself are excited to be back with all our students.  We hope everyone enjoyed some downtime and feel rejuvenated for a new year.
Below are a few items we would like to share:
  • Lyon staff made a few scheduling changes to better serve students and minimize transitions throughout the day.  These schedule changes began on January 5th, and primarily impact 4th and 5th grade.   Please click here for the updated schedule.

  • We are always wanting to be proactive in emergency preparation. Your contact information is a key component to our emergency process.  Please notify Lyon office with any new phone numbers, addresses, or emergency contact information.
BSIP Update
Lyon's Attendance

Lyon custodial staff worked hard in December to keep the building sanitized. The nice weather prior to break helped us get outside, which helped decrease constant indoor contact and avoid illness.  Due to Lyon staff and parent efforts, our attendance did rise by almost .5% in December.  We celebrated on the Monday prior to break by providing donuts to all students who were in attendance!
Our goal each month is 95%, however, we've been unable to reach this goal for the last 2 months.  Lyon students are striving to reach it in January!

LibraryLyon students voted for their favorite Show Me book before break.  And the winner from Lyon is . . . Trouper by Meg Kearney with 127 votes. S tudents will begin researching grade level topics that will be used in classroom projects.   Ask your child to share their topic and something interesting they have learned. Continue to read, read, read in 2016!

PE Lyon students will focus on the game of golf. Golf is a lifetime sport that has lost its notoriety amongst  the youth of America.  Many kids have not had the experience of this fun and challenging game. We celebrate the completion of this unit with a Putt Putt Golf Challenge at the end of the month. I can't wait to find the next Arnold Palmer at Lyon.
February is also Jump Rope for Heart month and we will begin our fundraiser with an assembly on February 1st.  Watch for more information to be sent home soon!

Computer Lab: Hopefully, everyone had a chance to visit  code.org or typingclub.com  over break! After a quick brush up on rules and expectations we are going to jump right into learning. 3rd-5th grade will keep building their skills by adding a piece about winter break to the "Winter" presentations we started in December. K-2nd grade will be taking an Acuity test followed by a keyboard skill building activity!

Music:
Students in 4th and 5th grade will be receiving recorder order forms this month.  5th graders would only need to order a recorder if they did not last year or have lost their recorder from last year.  We will start playing recorders sometime in March.   Kindergarten
and first grades will be studying how you move high and low on the staff.  Second grade will be playing different rhythm patterns together.  Third and fifth grades will be composing and playing what they compose on instruments.  Fourth grade will be studying instruments of the orchestra and world instruments.

Art:  Second grade artists used a salt resist technique to create a wintery background for their deer drawings. Third  grade artists drew mugs that looked like 3D forms to create colorful hot cocoa paintings.  Fifth  grade artists used  sponges to create asymmetrical poinsettia prints.

Counselor Connection

As we begin 3rd quarter, keep working hard to maintain regular school attendance.
During monthly classroom guidance with students, personal safety and careers will be covered by participating in a presentation from DiVentures.  Each grade level will attend an age appropriate session at the end of January here at Lyon.

   A Note from Nurse Lisa

As we start the new year, many of us have goals in mind for a healthier lifestyle. I encourage parents to be great examples and start their student/s off on the right foot by getting breakfast for themselves and for their child. Breakfast studies have shown that students who do not skip breakfast have improved grades, increased concentration, weight maintenance and less absences.

Free & Reduced Meal Benefits

A current meal application may be completed any time during the school year. If your family did not qualify at the beginning of school and income drops or household size increases, please complete a current application as you may now qualify.  ( Example: decreased work hours such as layoffs, birth of another child, or other people move in with you.)
Students qualifying for free meals may get one breakfast and one lunch at no charge each school day.  Students qualifying for reduced meals may get one breakfast at no charge and one lunch for only $.40 each school day.  Additional items or extra milk or extra juice is regular price for everyone.

Would you like strategies you can use at home to assist your child in becoming a better reader?
Our Reading Recovery Interventionists will be at the next PTO meeting, January 26th at 6:00 p.m., to provide you all with take home activities you can use with your child.  They will also share with you what reading and writing should look like and sound like at each grade level.

While you are here, contribute to next steps with Lyon's PTO as they continue to plan for the remainder of the school year.  This is an easy and helpful way to be involved in your child's school success.  PTO is also looking for new officers to begin in the 2016-2017 school year.  We'd love to have your support!
