Ignite and its caring mission - junior update

Foster Greer From my first steps into the Ignite orientation, I didn't know what to expect. I quickly saw how the whole program is simply a committed group of volunteers, donating their time to help others and expecting no tangible rewards. Being in an environment like this is incomparable to anything else; it is truly inspiring to be surrounded by human beings who all want to help the world in some way. Over multiple training sessions, this humanistic outlook of the volunteers became even more apparent. The comprehensive Ignite clinics focus on how to be an effective teacher, how to teach people with disabilities, how to keep the students safe, and most importantly, how to run a fun lesson.

Skiing has always been something that has come easy to me. I've been lucky enough to be able to ski without assistance, and it has become a major part of my life. Part of my excitement for this program comes from my love of skiing, and my desire to help those whose skiing abilities may be limited.

In beginning to work with Ignite, this excitement has only increased. I now feel like I have the skills to make a change in people's lives, and have an opportunity to change my own perspective on life.

Does your employer support your philanthropy?

Matching Donations Many companies offer programs to support their employees' volunteer and philanthropic efforts -- yours might too! Employee matching gift or volunteer programs are designed to maximize employee participation in the community and multiply the volunteer's or donor's impact. Some businesses offer paid time off each year for employees to volunteer. Others provide financial gifts in honor of their employees. And many companies offer matching gifts!

Allstate is an example of an employer with a significant employee program for volunteers and donors. If you or someone you know works at Allstate, check out how the Allstate Foundation will further magnify your efforts.

Here's a short list of some of the companies in Colorado with a Corporate Social Responsibility program: Allstate, Ball Aerospace, GreatWest Lifeco, Northrop Grumman, Lucky's Market, Kaiser Permanente, Rally Software, and Western Union. Plus many more.

See if your company has a matching donation program!

If your business isn't listed, please check with your human resources department to see if your company has a program like this or would be willing to start one!

Mentors needed
Group of Instructors
men·tor
ˈmenˌtôr,ˈmenˌtər/
noun
1. an experienced and trusted adviser.

Have you ever thought of being a mentor? Here at Ignite we have a wealth of knowledge, experience and talents. We are lucky to have so many of you with several years of experience volunteering at Ignite.

With 86 new volunteers, we could use your talent, skills, and wisdom to support the success of our program and our new volunteers. Many of our new volunteers work on the weekends and many of our long-time volunteers work during the week; we thank you for that!

Would you consider volunteering one or two weekend days before the season ends to share your experiences and knowledge with our new volunteers?

I want to thank all of our volunteers (on snow and off snow), our clinic leaders, our supervisors, our equipment volunteers, our marketing volunteers, our board of directors, and our team leads for making sure that Ignite provides safe, quality, fun, educational snowsport experiences. We could not do it without each one of you.

Thank you,
Carol Nickell
Executive Director

Special Olympics were a great success!

First a big thanks to all the Equipment Technicians for keeping us ship shape and ready for students!!  Thanks to those that helped with our new equipment filing system, it is working great!

Most of our athletes that competed in the Regional Special Olympics at Eldora placed in at least one discipline. They are very proud to have earned 1st and 2nd place ribbons.

Congratulations to all who will now be competing at Copper for the State Special Olympics on Sunday, February 28. They have been training every Saturday morning and we have seen huge improvements by each athlete!

Thanks to all the instructors who have been helping with coaching, you have made a big difference in their skills!

Good luck to all our athletes February 28th!!

Ignite prepared for the Special Olympics Race Series at Eldora Mountain Resort with training on January 30th. The dedicated team of students and volunteers then went to rock the race on February 8th. Special Olympics Race Clinic

Equipment update

Alton Mikkelsen Our new tethering belts should be in this week. Each will have designated locking carabiners. These will be signed out with the equipment technicians with your name, type of equipment being tethered and whether or not there was a release.

Please stay tuned for the Snow Sports Director to set up clinics on how to use, sign out, return and repack in the event of a release. We will be calling on Alton Mikkelsen, a certified parachute packer to assist with this clinic.

I cannot believe our season is almost over already. Before you know it we will be doing inventory, summer wax etc. and I will be placing preseason orders in early April to secure next season needs.  Inventory is always a fun day of course with BBQ so I will be sending out a notice if you would like to join in the "bean counting" fun!

Thanks everyone for volunteering!
