CoopZone's AGM will take place on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015 at 3:30 pm Eastern Time, by conference call. The conference call will last for approximately 90 minutes.

This is also your opportunity to hear about "the Co-operative Movement and Climate Change - in the lead-up to the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris". Yuill Herbert, Director of Sustainability Solutions Group Worker Co-op ( www.ssg.coop ), will give a presentation toward the end of the conference call; he will also be available for discussion and questions.

Seeking CoopZone Board Candidates

There are three three-year seats up for election at the upcoming AGM on the CoopZone Board of Directors: for the Prairies, Ontario, and Quebec, plus a two-year position which is at-large. The at-large position is available because the current incumbent, Martin Van den borre, has announced his resignation. New Course Director

CoopZone announced this spring the selection of Eric Tusz-King (Master of Adult Education) as its new Course Director. Eric will fill the vacancy created by Peter Hough's retirement.

"We are very pleased to announce this appointment," reported Jill Kelly, CoopZone Board Chair. "Eric will bring leadership and creativity to the CoopZone's training programs and a deep commitment to co-op development and to adult education." ...more

CoopZone also wishes to express its deep gratitude to Peter Hough, who coordinated the creation of the on-line co-op development Training Program for CoopZone, along with other very experienced developers. He has been its Course Director for the first four years of the Program, ending this summer as he retires.

CoopZone tele-learning session on investment shares in co-operatives

This session, which was offered jointly by CoopZone and the Canadian Worker Co-op Federation, covered the following areas:

The nature of preferred shares, terms and conditions - the basics that should be in every preferred share, all the issues around redemption (e.g., is it possible to structure preferred shares so that they are redeemable in part, and not to all shareholders)?
What is accrued interest?
What can be done under the various Co-op Acts? Which are the areas that you need to double-check in your Co-op Act?

The Guide, developed in consultation with federal, provincial and territorial governments, provides co-operatives and entrepreneurs considering the co-operative model with incorporation resources specific to the sector. Canada's Emerging Co-operators seeking new members / Coopérateurs emergeants du Canada recherche de nouveaux membres

Calling all young co-operators! Canada's Emerging Co-operators (CEC), a management committee of Co-operatives and Mutuals of Canada (CMC), is seeking new members starting in the Fall 2015. As a national committee comprised of 8-14 members from across the country, CEC aims to represent the interests of young and future Canadian co-operators through consultations, recommendations, programs and services. New members would join the first of two annual in-person sessions in November. Within this session, the committee completes strategic planning, reviews work plans, networks, and connects with the CMC Board. You can read more here.

Applications will be accepted starting in August 2015 from young co-operators, aged 18-35.

Coopérateurs émergents du Canada (CEC), un comité de gestion de Coopératives et mutuelles Canada (CMC), est à la recherche de nouveaux membres à compter de l'automne 2015. The Co-operators pledges $10 million to Canadian Co-operative Investment Fund / Engagement de Co-operators de 10 million $ au Fonds canadien

The Co-operators has announced that they will increase their pledge to the Canadian Co-operative Investment Fund (CCIF) to $10 million. The Fund, which will be launched in the coming months, will support the development and expansion of Canadian co-operatives with loans and other funding sourced from the co-op sector. Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) is preparing for the upcoming federal election by drawing attention to important co-operative sector projects that will benefit all Canadians in all regions. CMC has made two important requests of the federal government that can come to fruition during the next parliament: a federal investment in the Canadian Co-operative Investment Fund, and support for the national co-operative development strategy, the "Road Map". CCA to send Canadian Interns Overseas

The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) will be continuing its international internship program through a new $465,815 two-year agreement announced by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), May 12, 2015.

In this new program, CCA will mobilize 26 interns (13 each year) to six countries: Kenya, Malawi, Mongolia, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda. Interns will be placed with CCA partner co-operatives, with a focus on increasing food security and stimulating sustainable economic growth in these countries. Interns will assist local partner co-operatives and their members to undertake agricultural activities to meet food and income needs, including financing and operating small and medium-sized enterprises. A new component of the program is a collaboration with Rooftops Canada, the international development program of Canada's co-operative and social housing organizations. Eight interns will be placed with CCA partners in this sector over the next two years. Read more here

Co-op Atlantic ("Co-op") announced on June 26th that it had initiated certain transition measures in connection with its planned exit from its food and retail gas business, including closing four corporately owned food stores.

This announcement follows an announcement by Co-op Atlantic the day before that it had successfully obtained an order of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick initiating proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (the "CCAA"). The CCAA proceedings will provide Co-op with the time and stability needed to continue its ongoing efforts to pursue solutions to its financial challenges. SASKATOON - In her speech at the 2015 Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada annual congress, Hélène LeBlanc, MP for LaSalle-Émard and NDP Cooperatives Critic, stated her party's commitment to the Canadian cooperative sector.

The NDP recognizes the significant impact of cooperatives on the Canadian economy and their enormous potential to meet the growing needs of our communities and to create stable, high-quality jobs. New Democrats believe the federal government must support cooperatives by contributing financially to their development.

"Cooperatives play a vital role in building a more prosperous and fairer Canada. An NDP government will support a federal fund to support the establishment of new cooperatives, as well as the growth of those that already exist. We will also give credit unions concrete options for accessing capitalization sources."

"Cooperatives are part of our DNA. An NDP government will be an ally of the cooperative movement and will work with the sector to find solutions to their main challenges," said Ms. LeBlanc.

A new report commissioned by the International Co-operative Alliance examines all the debt and equity instruments used to finance the assets and operations of co-operatives.

Securing co-operative capital while guaranteeing member control is one of the five themes of the Alliance's Blueprint for a Co-operative Decade.

The report, authored by Michael Andrews, looks at capital in co-operatives around the world. It tries to explore how to access additional member capital or external capital while still adhering to co-operative principles.

Loi modifiant la Loi sur les coopératives et d'autres dispositions legislatives (Québec)

VEILLE-COOP, Avril 2015, Numéro 12

Le 30 mars 2015, le projet de loi n°19 du gouvernement du Québec, Loi modifiant la Loi sur les coopératives et d'autres dispositions législative, a été sanctionné. Les principales modifications adoptées concernent :

la protection du patrimoine des coopératives d'habitation dont un immeuble a été construit, acquis, restauré ou rénové dans le cadre d'un programme d'aide à l'habitation;
une précision concernant les personnes habilitées à imposer certaines mesures administratives et disciplinaires pour les coopératives comptant des membres travailleurs;
la possibilité, pour le ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et des Exportations, d'offrir des services transactionnels électroniques et sécurisés aux coopératives.
