Program
Making Physical Books in the Digital Age: Reflections on the Work of Peter and Donna Thomas, Wandering Book Artists

Peter and Donna Thomas are self-employed book artists, papermakers and letterpress printers who write, illustrate, and bind their own books. They are also authors of More Making Books by Hand and 1000 Artists' Books. You can see all their books on their web site.   http://www2.cruzio.com/~peteranddonna/.

  Song of the Open Road

Since 1976 Peter and Donna Thomas have worked both collaboratively and individually as book artists, originally under the imprint of The Good Book Press, and subsequently as Peter and Donna Thomas: Santa Cruz. When they established The Good Book Press in 1978, they created books in the tradition of the great private presses: limited editions, made of the finest materials and produced to the highest standards of quality. For the next 10 years they produced "fine press" books in both full size and miniature format, making the paper, printing, and binding the books themselves.

In the late 1980s, they used personal computer technology, explored non-traditional book structures and shaped book objects and produced both limited editions and one-of-a-kind books. In the 1990s, they began to document the history and techniques of hand papermaking as a contribution to the renaissance of the craft, through lectures, video of the techniques of traditional vat mill hand papermakers in Europe, and publication of fine press books about papermaking.

In 2002 they wrote a manual for bookbinding, More Making Books by Hand: Exploring Miniature Books, Alternative Structures and Found Objects. A conceptual art project to create a traveling artists' book led to a 5-year odyssey, 2010-2015, as the "Wandering Book Artists" took their gypsy wagon artists' book on 3 cross country trips giving talks, workshops and demonstrations to both academic and community based audiences. You can read about this trip on their blog.   http://www.wanderingbookartists.blogspot.com/

(Psssst: There is still a place or two remaining in world-class book artist Peter Thomas's workshop, Jan. 14-16. Registration info is at   http://www.paperworks.info/workshops.html)

Save the Date
The Feb. 11 program showcases Helen Hiebert, a Colorado artist who constructs installations, sculptures, films and artist books using handmade paper, thread and light. She teaches and lectures about papermaking and lamp-making and exhibits her work internationally. Author of the books Papermaking with Plants, The Papermaker's Companion, Paper Illuminated, Playing With Paper, and Playing With Pop-Ups. Helen has an extensive network of paper colleagues around the world and her interest in how things are made (from paper) keeps her up-to-date on current paper trends, which she writes about in her weekly blog post called The Sunday Paper. Helen's most recent installation, The Wish, is a giant dandelion sculpture at Anythink Huron Street Library in Thornton. She holds an annual paper retreat in her Red Cliff studio each September. Spring 2016 Workshops for PW members

Peter Thomas - "The Miniature Book and the Book Artist" - $220
Thurs., Jan. 14, 1-4pm
Fri., Jan. 15, 9am-4pm
Sat., Jan. 16, 9am-12pm
Workshop will focus on small/tiny books and various ways to tailor binding techniques to that scale. Each day Peter will demonstrate how to make one or two of the innovative miniature book binding structures that he and Donna have developed, and then time will be allocated for creating your own books. (continued online)

Helen Hiebert - "Flexible/Collapsible Paper Structures" - $220
Thurs., Feb. 11, 1-4pm
Fri., Feb. 12, 9am-12pm
Sat., Feb. 13, 9am-12pm
Turn flat sheets of paper into sculptural forms and create a sampling of objects that expand and collapse, open and close, fold and unfold, inflate and deflate. Explore the creation of multi-paneled structures that can turn into books, tubes, tunnels, lanterns and more. * Note: we will create new structures different from Helen's last Tucson classes.

J ulie Leonard - "Japanese Marbling and Stiff-leaf/Drum Leaf Book Structures" - $280
Mon., March 14, 9am-4pm
Tues., March 15, 9am-4pm
Wed., March 16, 9am-4pm
We begin this workshop with a day of working with a traditional Japanese marbling technique (but with a twist) called Suminagashi, which means 'floating ink'. On our second and third days, we make models of various stiff leaf and drum leaf binding structures--from the most basic form (quite like commercially produced children's 'board books') to versions that allow for pages constructed with mats and windows. (continued online)

Amanda Beekhuizen - "Letterpress Printing" -  $280
Fri., May 13, 9am-4pm
Sat., May 14, 9am-4pm
Sun., May 15, 9am-4pm
The workshop will cover typesetting (both wood and lead), linoleum block cutting, and letterpress printing on the four Vandercook presses at the UofA Book Art and Letterpress Lab. Students will use these foundational skills to print a broadside, small single-sheet book, and/or other printed ephemera of their choosing. (continued online)

Bobbie's Notes

Happy New Year!   2016 marks the 15th anniversary of PaperWorks, a date we are proud to celebrate with the opening of our exhibit "Put a Stamp On It."   I hope you can all attend our opening reception on Sunday, January 10 from 2-4pm, at the Postal History Foundation. (See left column for details) We will showcase current members' work, past and present, and a 15-year commemorative PaperWorks cachet will also be available. How fun is that??!

That kicks off our anniversary year, and we have much more going on this winter and spring: Fabulous workshops with artists from across the US, smaller PaperPlay classes taught by our own PaperWorks artist members, Creative Circles, and stimulating speakers at our monthly meetings. There are still a few spots available for Peter Thomas workshop on miniature books held Jan 14-16, suitable for beginners to advanced students. Peter is a master book artist who has taught all over the country. This is a wonderful opportunity to work with him!

I hope you will enjoy the many things PW has to offer. I'm so proud of our collective creative energy and how we have grown.
