January 2015

Happy New Year!

The holidays have passed and with every New Year comes the feeling of starting fresh, setting self-improvement goals and at the same time reflecting on memories of years past.

Each year comes with new aspirations like "This year I'm going to clean up my diet" or "This year I'm going to run that 10k!" We don't always meet the goals we set for ourselves but year after year we set these goals. Maybe this is the year you set those big goals and achieve them! Or maybe smaller goals seem more fitting or setting no goals at all is the goal. Maybe it's about living a more simple life and planning less.

For 2015 I decided to set some very small attainable goals. Life is busy and I can easily add too much to my plate. So for this year plan to #1: Carve out more family fun time and #2: Read a book. It's not that I don't read, I do read but I read everything the Internet wants to spit out at me and it's high time I picked up a fun/light read to just sit and enjoy.

Here are some of the Performance Team's New Year Resolutions for 2015:

"To cook more meals" Courtney

"Try not to sweat the small stuff" Dr. Flatt

"Procrastinate less" Tessa

"Get outdoors more" Joanna

"No shopping for 30 days" Lorraine

"Organize my house" Dr. Kusch

The entire Performance teams wishes you happy goal setting (or not) and a healthy 2015!

A New Program at Performance!

Hi everyone, Dr. Kusch here.

I wanted to take a moment to tell you about a program Dr. Flatt, Dr. Statz and I are going to start here at Performance. Although it focuses on the low back it's for ALL, yes ALL people. We'll explain that further when we meet. But first a brief personal story.

I was a professional soccer player before becoming a chiropractor. One of the things that plagued me for my entire career was low back pain. And not any old low back pain. I am talking about constant boring, achy low back pain with frequent referral pain into my legs. I couldn't walk long, couldn't drive long couldn't really do anything without feeling my back pain. My normal daily activities like dressing in the morning were all taxing and painful.

At the age of 25, while warming up for a practice, I keeled over in pain. I had herniated 2 discs in my low back according to MRI, which also revealed degeneration of the discs, degeneration of the joints and osteoarthritis as well.  Oh and I have the images and report to confirm that.  I recovered from that albeit back to the same level of pain as before.

A year, almost, to the day I had another episode of incapacitating low back pain and again the following year.  Shortly after, not only for reasons related to my low back I retired from professional and international soccer. At that point in my life I believed I had a life sentence to low back pain. So needless to say I know what it means to experience both incapacitating episodes and chronic low back pain.  However, what I didn't realize was that my own experience of low back pain was necessary for me to arrive at where I am today.

You see, about 2 years ago I set out on a journey to investigate and study the low back. Being in practice for 9 yrs has taught me so much and after that time and the studying and investigating of 2 years ago I have come up with a life changing program to address low back pain or to prevent it from ever occurring. By actually applying these concepts to my own life I write to you today to tell you I have ZERO low back pain.  I have not had an episode of incapacitating low back pain for years and my chronic low back pain is GONE. It hasn't just decreased it is GONE. Bye - bye, non - existent. Not even a 1/10. And the coolest thing about this is it is simple.

Stay tuned for an official announcement next week in social media with the details and a clearer description of what you can expect in this exciting new program we will be offering at Performance Integrated Health. We can't wait to share it with you.

Liver and Its Role In Detoxification and the Importance of Glutathione:

Dr. Kathrine Tavakoli, Naturopath

The liver has three main detoxification pathways:

Filtering the blood to remove large toxins.

Enzymatically breaking down unwanted chemicals, which occurs in two steps.

Synthesizing and secreting bile for excretion of fat-soluble toxins and cholesterol.

Glutathione is considered "a triple threat" to toxins. It neutralizes free radicals, enhances the immune system and detoxifies the liver. Today's hectic life doesn't quite help this process. Everything from refined foods and GMOs to over the counter medications to stress will dampen the body's ability to produce and store this vital antioxidant. Also at around age 45, our Glutathione levels dip. In fact these levels can dip as much as 50% of what is known to be optimal.

Glutathione is important for detoxification purposes, prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease, boosting our immune system, slow down the process of aging, and help us reach peak mental and physical function. "Research has shown that raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development". So, maintaining health, improving your performance, preventing disease and aging graciously depends on keeping your glutathione levels high.

Please contact Reception to book or for more information. Dr Tavakoli offers complimentary 15 minute consultations before booking in if needed.

New Techniques for Treating Plantar Fasciitis

With the new year upon us, many of us have chosen a fitness goals as something we wish to achieve this year. A vast majority of those goals that have been expressed to me seem to be running related. Now that training has commenced for a most of us, there is always a chance that an injury can happen.

I came across this article about plantar fasciitis and thought it would be a great place to start in talking about running injuries. We see a lot of running related foot injuries in the clinic and this article gives a great explanation as to what the plantar fascia is and some of the related musculature that could be involved in an injury. This article also touches on some great ideas for treatment, both on your own and in a clinical setting. Have a read and let me know what you think. I am always here to answer questions, and if you or someone you are experiencing what you think is plantar fasciitis or another running related injury, come in a get evaluated and see we can help you out and keep you training so that your 2015 fitness goals are reached.

Is Depression a Kind of Allergic Reaction?
Kim Watt, Registered Clinical Counsellor and Wellness Coach

The connection between the mind and the body is a strong one. For example, there's evidence that depression may be linked to inflammation within the body, and that when stress and other causes of inflammation are reduced, the symptoms of depression tend to decrease as well. Another good reason to take good care of yourself, both physically and emotionally.

This is an interesting article that explores that concept - the link between inflammation and depression. A growing number of scientists are suggesting that depression is a result of inflammation caused by the body's immune system which can be greatly affected by stress.

If you'd like to work on identifying stressors in your life and how to work past them, our Registered Clinical Counsellor Kim can help. Give us a call to book in or for more information.
