Why you should renew your passport now
For travelers who have a passport that expires in 2016, the United States Department of State is urging people to renew them now in order to avoid congestion later in the year. According to  Julia Preston of the New York Times, the State Department explained that it expects a rush of people to renew their passports over the next two years, a decade after the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative went into effect. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative allowed the department to issue 10-year passports, and there was a serious backlog when they were first handed out in 2006 and 2007. Now, 10 years later, the State Department believes the rush will once again be huge as millions of travelers attempt to renew their passports. According to Bureau of Consular Affairs press officer Beth Finan, it will take roughly six weeks for a passport renewal, which is two weeks longer than the process took last year. You can also request an expedited passport, which will take three weeks to process and cost an extra $60 on top of the standard $110 renewal fee. 4 Outstanding NYC hotel bars
Not many stand-alone bars can match the luxuriant sophistication found in a nice hotel bar, traditionally a glamorous mingling spot for well-heeled travelers, high-end locals and mission-critical intimate corporate get-togethers. Here are a few of our favorite hotel bars in the city. As always, book the hotel through your Protravel agent for VIP amenities.
  • Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel: One of the city's most celebrated classic spots, with its white-coated waiters, sophisticated cognac drinks and elegant piano music. Named after Ludwig Bemelmans, a children's author and illustrator known best for his famed Madeline books, the bar boasts beautiful artwork by the man himself on its walls. 35 East 76th Street between Madison and Park Avenue on the Upper East Side
  • Andaz Fifth Ave: With its dimly-lit subterranean ambiance, tasty tapas and laid-back crowd, the bar at the Andaz  can sometimes be a good choice. 485 Fifth Ave at 41st Street in Midtown East
  • Rose Bar At The Gramercy Park Hotel: The Has it all-sumptuous cocktails, attentive waitstaff, a cozy fireplace, wonderful live music and Julian Schabel art. Dress to impress, or you won't be allowed to join in on the fun. 2 Lexington Ave at 21st Street in Gramercy
  •  St. Regis King Cole Bar: Birthplace of the Bloody Mary, the space itself is an elegant nod to the city's old school upscale bar scene, with its small wooden tables and sleek wooden bar framing the St. Regis' signature piece, the famed 1906 Maxfield Parrish mural King Cole. And don't miss their killer martinis, worth the price. 2 East 55th Street at Fifth Avenue in Midtown East
