Dean's Forum Provides Campus Update
Thank you to all who joined us at the recent Dean's Forum. For those not able to attend, I touched upon several points of interest involving our school and faculty practice plan, namely: the tentative agreement between Kennedy Health and Jefferson University Hospital and the proposed sale of land to Inspira Health Network for the construction of a new medical center on Rowan's West Campus in Harrison Township. As the local health care landscape changes, I look forward to SOM playing a bigger role in providing quality, compassionate care to patients, while increasing education prospects for future physicians. Exciting opportunities are in our future, including an expanded class size starting with the incoming first year students in August, and a study to determine the feasibility of an Atlantic City campus in partnership with AtlantiCare. This will be an exciting year for SOM, and it wouldn't be possible without the support of our dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni and other supporters.

Dr. Jennifer Fischer Named AACOM NAOME Fellow
The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) recently announced the 2016-2021 National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) Fellows. SOM's
Dr. Jennifer Fischer, assistant professor, Molecular Biology, was one of five new fellows inducted into the Academy this year. As fellows, inductees function as leaders and mentors for academic scholarship and excellence within the osteopathic medical education community. NAOME was established in 2009 as the first national health professions education academy. Its peer-selected membership makes up a community of outstanding educators from across the osteopathic medical education continuum. Each NAOME Fellow serves a five-year term.

Department of Psychiatry Professor
Publishes Book
Congratulations to Dr. Donald Light, professor, Psychiatry, on the publication of his book, Good Pharma: the Public-Health Model of the Mario Negri Institute. The book describes how a large institute, with 51 laboratories devoted to developing better medicines for patients, provides a public health model without patenting any of its discoveries or new uses in an open-science, collaborative, self-critical style at much lower costs and with data transparency, than commercialized research. Dr. Light co-authored the book with Antonio F. Maturo, who is an associate professor of Sociology and Business Law at the University of Bologna in Italy.

Black History Month Celebrations Include Display, Annual Dinner and Silent Auction
The SOM chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) held several events in February to commemorate Black History Month.
The group hosted a display series entitled "Journey through the African Diaspora" in the Academic Center Atrium. For four weeks, students highlighted the rich diversity of peoples originating from Africa and featured historical and current information about blacks in four different countries and regions: Africa, the Caribbean islands, Latin America and the United States. Samples of food items were also served.
The SNMA also hosted their Annual Black History Month Celebration on February 25. This year's theme was "Lighting the Path for the Future" and featured a keynote address, a variety of soul and ethnic foods, a silent auction, and performances of spoken word, African dance and music. A portion of the proceeds from this year's dinner was donated towards a scholarship for a Woodrow Wilson High School student from Camden.
