"Wa lallapo nawa!" "Wa lallapo nawa!"

 Ovambo tribal people go back and forth, pumping hands, smiling and greeting each other: "Good morning!" "Good morning!" "Good morning, meme (honored woman)!" "Good morning, tete (honored man)!" I loved these people and their wonderfully warm and gracious culture!
We were six Washingtonians, including Pastor Ron Kempe and me from St. Mark's, serving as a volunteer delegation from the Southwestern Washington Synod of the ELCA to the Lutheran churches in Namibia. We had been commissioned by Bishop Jaech, blessed by our congregations and briefed by some who had made the journey before us.

Responding to the Tragedy in Roseburg, Oregon
Sometimes when tragedy strikes a community it is difficult to know how to respond in a meaningful manner. Pastor Jane Baker of Faith Lutheran Church in Roseburg, Oregon gives us an opportunity to respond to the shootings that recently took place in their community. She asks for support for Casa de Belen, a shelter for homeless teens which was impacted by the recent shootings at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. The shelter couldn't hold its annual fundraiser, and thus is asking for outside help. This shelter is the kind of service that could help keep the marginalized youth engaged. It's these kids who sometimes prove so disaffected that they end up isolated and attracted to lashing out. Supporting this shelter could be a one-time effort and give tangible support to a traumatized community shattered by horrific gun violence. If you would like to support this shelter, you can respond directly by following the link in her letter or by putting some funds in an offering envelope with the designation: For Casa de Belen in Roseburg. NEPAL: Friends of the Women's Protection Center-What's New?
Stop by the table in the Narthex on Nov. 8 and Nov. 22 to learn more about the transforming work at the "Safe House" in Heatuda, Nepal, that Catarina Terrill visited in 2014. Board members of the
Friends of the Women's Protection Center will have slides to show of a visit in May, information on the Annual Gala on
Dec. 12, and brochures on the organization's work of rescuing those from human trafficking. The Center provides survivor care, rehabilitation and education to its residents and their communities.  Thank you to all that made bags and donated supplies for the build of 87 SCHOOL KITS that will be shipped in November to LWR! THANKS goes to 5th/6th grade youth who prepared supplies and the Jr Alyve group who built the kits. LWR is in need of more kits as supplies have been depleted with the great need, so please continue to donate supplies as you are able for this worthy cause of helping children in need. A new women's group is being formed especially for younger women. The group will meet the first Friday of each month for coffee, pastry and conversation around issues in our lives, looking at how faith might affects those issues. The online magazine Café will be used as our initial resource.

Children and Youth Faith Formation

supplement Sunday School lessons.
Christmas Children's Musical! It is that exciting time of year again when we will begin to gear up for our annual Christmas Children's Musical here at St. Marks. Amy Wigstrom will be our director, and we are so lucky to have her! Please see the attached form, and bring it with you if you on Sunday to give to Amy in Sunday School. Talk to your children about the show, and let them know it is going to be a lot of fun.
International/Heritage Night and Potluck dinner! All are invited.

We begin the day with Swedish pancakes with lingonberries at 9 AM. Lunch menu includes, yellow pea soup, turkey noodle soup, bratwurst, and homemade pie. (we need homemade pies) We are adding homemade Swedish meatballs to our menu. Help in the kitchen or come and enjoy our delicious homemade food.
We will display any remaining items on Sunday morning, November 8. At 12 noon we will need help packing away after another successful Bazaar!
Remember: One half of our profits go out-of-house.

You're invited to join an Interfaith Bible Study with members of Temple Beth El, Bethany Presbyterian Church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and our own St. Mark's Lutheran Church by The Narrows. The topic of our study this Fall is: "Finding God in the Other." We'll explore Bible stories that teach us to see God in those who are different from us. From Hagar the Egyptian slave to Cyrus the Persian conquerer, we'll explore how God works in and through those whom God chooses, whether we like it or not. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan to join us for this engaging series that will be led by the clergy of each congregation:

Baptized on Sunday at the 9:45 service, Augustus Doyle Elkins who was born August 28, 2013. He is the son of Bryan and Katrina Elkins. His baptismal sponsors are Shanynn Ryan and Tim Anderson.
Member Eleanor Larson died October 17, 2015 at the age of 92. A memorial service will be held at the Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Center Chapel on Saturday, November 7th at 2pm.

Allan McLean Update and Thank You
Both Allan and I (Sally Ann McClean) very much appreciate the many expressions of good wishes and prayers, calls and visits and cards received
from the pastors and others of our St. Mark's family. We feel blessed by the circumstances of Allan's sidewalk fall
(on the afternoon of October 17th) which sent us to Allenmore Emergency
where he received four staples to close gashes to his head. He received a myriad of tests which
revealed the need to be transferred to Tacoma General. His right carotid artery was 98% blocked, his heart was
working at only 40% efficiency and his heart is wired backwards, causing his heart to pump in a reverse fashion
from most people's. After having a stent placed in the offending artery and having a pacemaker implanted,
he was released this past Saturday afternoon, seven days after the incident.
If not for the severity of the fall (that is, if we had not felt compelled to go to the Emergency Room), I may have learned about those
abnormalities only after an autopsy.
He is doing very well now, walking around the campus of Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community every day but has
many follow-up doctor's appointments to keep in the next few weeks.
We give thanks for the unknown Good Samaritan who stopped her car, helped Allan sit up, learned our phone number and called me at home; we pray for the continued fine medical care provided by all who ministered to Allan. We praise God for His mercies and blessings and for the miracles we see every day; we value the friendship of our
church family and treasure your prayers; and we are deeply grateful for the several visits from Pastor Ruud and
from Pastor Rue during Allan's hospitalization.

Dear Friends at St. Mark's,
First of all, thank you for your wonderful contribution to the ministry of
ChinaConnect. I was to update you on a few things that are happening in the Nanchang area. The green egg project continues to be a wild success. The children are excited about the eggs they will get to eat first thing in the morning. Good news travels fast so a headmaster at another school heard about this project and wants it for his 26 students. It will cost china
connect about $58 a month to do this. (The board meets next week to consider this and other issues.) Currently, we are providing Peace School's 150 students an egg a day at a rate of approximately $250 per month.
Additionally, china
connect is partnering with three colleges in the area. Together, we are providing thirteen volunteer student teachers at three countryside schools. In David Du's (our guy in China) recent letter, he said the local government and the Education Department have given china
connect and headmaster Yu's work a very good evaluation.
