Sewer Spill at 1692 Deep Creek Drive

 October 7, 2015

Folks,

The POA has learned that a Sewer Spill occurred yesterday morning. The Public Service Announcement follows:

Public Service Announcement - Sanitary Sewer Overflow at 1692 Deep Creek Drive
NOTICE OF A SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW AT 1692 DEEP CREEK DRIVE

At approximately 8:15 a.m. the morning of Tuesday, October 6, 2015, a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) was found to be surfacing near a valve box associated with the duplex grinder servicing the Sun Place Condominium Community at 1692 Deep Creek Drive.  By 8:38 a.m. Garrett County Department of Public Works - Utilities Division (GCDPW-U) staff had the valve shut, grinder pump turned off, flow stopped and the rest of the County staff notified of the situation.  By 8:50 a.m., the GCDPW-U tanker was on site and clean-up efforts initiated.  It was estimated that approximately 6,000 gallons of raw sewage was discharged to the roadside ditch running along the east side of Deep Creek Dr, which flowed into the small backwater area across Deep Creek Dr from Bill's Marine Service located at 1867 Deep Creek Dr.  From that point, the discharge flowed through the culvert and into Deep Creek Lake.

It was determined that the SSO was the result of a ruptured check valve on the service lateral for the Sun Place Condominium grinder pump.  Repairs were complete and service restored the same day.

The Maryland Department of the Environment, Deep Creek Lake Management and the Garrett County Health Department were notified and water quality sampling was initiated.  The affected docks and area have been posted, and the affected areas cleaned and limed.  The postings will remain in effect until water quality returns to normal levels.

Cheers,

Bob Hoffmann
President
