Congratulations to Gabriel Lopez, and Ryan Balba, two Fall Q Camp participants winners of a $500 scholarship! Let's meet them!

Ryan Balba
2nd year, Warren College
Ryan is a Political Science major, still deciding on whether to double-major in either Ethnic Studies or Urban Planning. Ryan believes either of the two would help prepare him for his goal: helping the impoverished and underrepresented.
"If I could change one thing about the world," Ryan says, "I would make people more accepting." His dream job would involve working to make systematic change on a governmental level.
Ryan already spent last year on first year counsel and working on the UConsent campaign. He also began to come to the LGBT Resource Center near the end of last year, which is where he heard about Q Camp. His favorite part of Q Camp was learning about the Center; he believes it's critically important, particularly the visibility it provides for an often invisible community. This year, he plans to join more student groups, and be more involved with his communities.

Gabriel Lopez
1st year, Marshall College
Gabriel is a Marine Biology major, which, he stresses, is completely different from being a general Biology Major. "We're a small department," he says, and explains that Marine Biology is tucked away in Scripps, away from the rest of Biology. "We're unique," he says. "It's nice."
As might be expected of someone who chose to study the sea, he cares about the environment and if offered the chance to change one thing about the world, he would fix pollution, because we are irrevocably changing the planet.
Gabriel heard about Q Camp from someone he met at Summer Bridge, and he was glad to have attended. He found the most interesting part to be the history of the movement on campus. He marvels at the fact that students had to fight to get an LGBT Resource Center, it inspires him. He hopes that in his first year, he'll be able to get involved in LGBT groups and other communities that are meaningful to him. |

Trans Discussion Group | Tuesdays, 5:00-6:00pm
Trans Discussion Group is a committed and organized support and discussion group designed for trans folks, including individuals who are questioning and/or identify outside their assigned gender. There will be weekly group meetings on trans and gender related issues, group activities and group outings! It's a good opportunity to meet new faces and share each other's experiences. This is a closed space.
Fluid Attraction | Wednesday, 5:00-6:00pm
This group is an open dialogue and supportive space for those who identify with bisexual, biromantic, fluid, pansexual, panromantic, queer and questioning experiences. We welcome you to attend, listen, participate, and connect with others as we explore fluid sexualities and/or fluid romantic attractions. This is a community space where confidentiality will be respected.
Femmes of Colour | Thursdays, 6:00-7:00pm
This is a closed space for Femmes of Colour.
Decolonizing Queerness | Thursdays 7:00-8:00pm
A closed group for QTPOC (queer and/or trans-people of color) to get together, create space, and foster community to (re)learn about our identities through healing, non-Western, and decolonial community practices.

Coming Out Group

The Coming Out group is a place to meet and gain support while discussing your sexual and/or gender identities in a confidential setting. This group is for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, straight, or questioning folks who are coming out, considering coming out or may already be out. Topics are determined by group participants and can include stress, fear, anxiety, loneliness, excitement and celebration with regard to coming out.
The Coming Out Group is open for the first 3 weeks of each quarter and closes after for safety.

A.S. Alliance
The mission of the Alliance Program is to train Allies to be supporters and advocates of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Trained Alliance members will provide a welcoming environment for LGBT students, faculty and staff. Alliance members welcome individuals to be open and honest about their sexual orientation and/or gender identity without fear of repercussions and endeavor to make UCSD free of sexual bias, heterosexism and homophobia. The goal of the Alliance Program is to build a visible network of advocacy at UCSD.

The Overnight Program is run through SPACES, and one of the tracks is co-run by the BSU (Black Student Union) and BRC (Black Resource Center). SUNY Press is collecting articles for a new anthology, Outside the Gender Box, which will be the first anthology to focus on the experiences of trans and non-binary gender students, staff, and faculty. Articles should be 5,000-7,500 words and can be research or first-person narrative.

LGB Attitudes & Experiences Survey
A team from the University of Tennessee is conducting an empirical study about the attitudes and lived experiences, and invites anyone over 18 who experiences some same-gender attraction to participate. It should take approximately 25-35 minutes. There will be a raffle for $20 Starbucks gifts cards among the participants.

OutSet Filmmaking Apps

OutSet is the Young Filmmakers Project from LA LGBT Center and Outfest, a filmmaking workshop for LGBTQ young people between the ages of 16-24. Outset exists to provide a safe space for LBGTQ young people to tell their stories and learn the skills to bring them to life in the form of a short film.

Lesbian Body Image Survey
The Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is doing a study on lesbian attitudes & feelings about your own body,gender identity and gender expression. Lesbians over 18 are eligible and $50 Amazon gift cards will be raffled for participants. The survey should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.

Robert Giard Fellowship

The Robert Giard Fellowship Award will be awarded in support of a new or continuing project that addresses issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ identity. This award is presented to an emerging, early or mid-career artist from any country working in photography and still images.

Opportunity to Urge Gov. Brown to support AB 959
AB 959 would ensure that sexual orientation and gender identity data would be collected along with other important demographic information used to determine state policies and funding. A petition is circulating in favor of AB 959, to increase out visibility in state policies.
