Initiatives to Decrease Gun Violence

Today Mayor Rick Kriseman and Chief of Police Anthony Holloway announced new initiatives to decrease gun violence in the city of St. Petersburg.

Mayor Kriseman asked gun shops to distribute his letter to legal gun owners, asking them to store their guns safely to keep them out of the hands of children and criminals. The letter also informs them to pick-up a free gun lock at the police department's Crime Prevention Unit by calling 893-7128. Anyone who lives or works in the City of St. Petersburg is eligible to receive a free gun lock.

Chief Holloway explained that many guns stolen out of cars end up in the wrong hands on the street. In 2015, of a total of 293 guns reported stolen, 155 were taken from vehicles. He reminded gun owners to remove their weapons from their vehicles and lock their vehicle doors.

Free auto theft prevention devices (clubs) are also available through the police dept.

The Mayor and Chief also introduced the new Community Intervention Director, Rev. Kenny Irby. This is a new position created to ensure young felons are provided with community resources to help them get back on a successful track.

Janelle Irwin SPB: St. Petersburg hires full-time community intervention director

Expressing outrage and concern over a rash of shootings that left seven dead in the closing weeks of 2015, St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman vowed to spend $1 million combating gun violence - particularly in the mostly poor Midtown and South St. Pete neighborhoods.

Kriseman took the first step in making good on that promise this week by hiring a community intervention director. During a speech at the Carter G. Woodson African-American History Museum last month, Kriseman announced a position would be created to lead the charge in stamping out gun violence. This position appears to fit that bill.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Pete starts pedaling toward bike share partnership

It took three attempts, but a bike share program appears to be cruising toward reality in St. Petersburg.

In a non-binding vote, six City Council members signaled Thursday they supported Mayor Rick Kriseman's $1.5 million bike share proposal. They left open the question of how to pay for it.

The City Council should take a final vote in April if negotiations go as expected with CycleHop, which already runs Tampa's program.

Tampa Bay Times: Montanari on the Mend

St. Petersburg City Council member Ed Montanari is doing well post-heart surgery, reports his friend, former mayor Rick Baker.

Montanari, 57, traveled to the renowned Cleveland Clinic for surgery on Feb. 23. He is expected to miss a few months while he recovers.

The surgery went well and there weren't any complications, Baker said.

Baker relayed the good news at a surprise 90th birthday party for former mayor Don Jones at City Hall. All the city's living mayors were in attendance, including current Mayor Rick Kriseman and former mayors Bill Foster, David Fischer and Bob Ulrich.

Tampa Bay Times: Clear St. Petersburg block for redevelopment

With its vacant buildings and crumbling parking garage, an entire block in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg is an ugly wasteland in a vibrant urban core of restaurants, shops and apartments. The groups that control the block finally have reached an agreement that will free this prime location to be sold and redeveloped if the buildings are demolished. Preservationists want at least one of the buildings to be saved, but their argument is not compelling and the city should allow the block to be cleared so a new vision for a signature block can be pursued.
