Marian's Intensives have been pivotal weeks in my understanding and practice of Alexander Technique. While I've been enjoying all the benefit
that come with weekly lessons, I've made exponential progress during the Intensives. The experience of daily lessons is so transformative, I do whatever I can to
participate in the Intensives every time they are offered.

Back when F. M. Alexander was teaching his technique, people would usually take half-hour Alexander lessons five days a week (per F. M. Alexander's requirement). This worked very well, as having private lessons on a daily basis provides for more in-depth and rapid learning and improvement. This is still the most beneficial and efficient way to learn the Alexander Technique. Following on this tradition, special daily intensives are being offered this this spring:
Five 1/2 hour lessons with teacher Marian Goldberg over the course of six days at a special discounted rate of $265. (Standard rate is $325 for five lessons or $65 per lesson.) Dates:
- March 22 - March 27
- April 19 - April 24
- May 17 - May 22
Payment for the full series is due at the first lesson. One lesson of the series only may be rescheduled (with 24-hour notice).
Slots are very limited for intensives. To schedule a series or for more information, phone 703-821-2920 or e-mail

Squatting is natural and easy for young children. A stable squatting position frees up the arms for activities close to the ground. (See above photos of a toddler and F. M. Alexander in his 60s.) Adults are capable of squatting with the same freedom and ease as young children but many adults and even older children develop tension habits that interfere with this natural ability. Alexander Technique lessons are particularly effective at stopping the habits that interfere with our innate coordination. Students are usually very pleasantly surprised to find that they can bend farther — often reaching a squatting position — and much more easily and comfortably than they previously thought possible.
Squatting is often done as an exercise, but this type of forced, rigid, and often uncomfortable movement and position is very different from the easy, balanced, and mechanically efficient squatting movement that is part of our innate coordination.
Done naturally, sitting down in a chair is an abbreviated form of squatting: one performs a squatting motion but makes contact with the seat of the chair before completing a full squat. This allows for a “light landing” onto the chair seat with a lengthened back and neck, rather than with the “plop” that many of us tend to do. Watch a toddler or young child sit down in a chair: they don't plop; they squat.
