Over the Christmas break, there are several STEMM opportunities your student can prepare for or take advantage of before returning to school.
- Beginning Thursday, Jan. 7, right after school, the Special Ops Cub will begin preparing for the Mini-Urban Challenge Lego Mindstorms robotic programming competition. The club will meet every Thursday until the competition on Saturday, Mar. 5.
- If your student is a junior or senior and has a GPA of 3.5 or higher, he or she should consider applying for the summer Wright Scholar program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The application, found here, is due by Friday, Jan. 8.
- Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is inviting students to submit entries for the 2016 Martin Luther King Jr Humanitarian Essay Contest. Submissions guidelines can be found here. Essays must be sent in by Monday, Jan. 11.
- Girls interested in STEMM are encouraged to attend Miami University's Careers Involving Quantitative Skills Day on Tuesday, Jan. 12. You can watch videos of last year's speakers and learn more about this year's career day here.
- If your student is looking for something to read over the Christmas break, I suggest Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science - and the World by Rachel Swaby (preview the book here.)
-
Also, on Christmas night, there will be a rare occurrence of a full moon. This will be the first
time in almost 30 years that there has been a full moon on Christmas. Get outdoors and enjoy the peace and light of the night!
If you have any questions about the items above, please do not hesitate to contact me.

STUDENTS
Class of 2019
Computer Skills Testing Course
All students are required to complete the Computer Topics class before graduating from CJ. However, students are given the opportunity during their freshman year to test out of the class if they so desire. Testing out requires demonstrating competency in four areas -- keyboarding, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The tests and training materials for the tests are available
online. Students are strongly urged to complete the training before taking the tests. All four tests must be successfully completed by
March 15, 2016 or the student will need to enroll in the Computer Topics class next year.
