Energy News
The Governors' Wind Energy Coalition has announced that it has added solar energy issues to the Coalition's portfolio, following a unanimous vote from member governors. The Coalition also announced its new name: Governors' Wind and Solar Energy Coalition.

"I support the foresight of my colleagues to broaden the Coalition's focus and include solar energy development as a policy priority," said Governor Gina Raimondo, vice chair of the Coalition. "Wind and solar provide complementary benefits to the U.S. electric grid and will help diversify the country's energy mix. The need for states to take a broader view of renewable power is clear."

The addition of solar energy will help the Coalition engage both Congress and the President on other issues, such as the storage and movement of energy and research and development. The solar and wind industries share a common vision of a greener and homegrown American energy future. Benefits to consumers include fixed-price electric power with long-term savings, economic growth opportunities, and cleaner air.

Driving Rhode Island to Vehicle Electrification (DRIVE) is an Electric Vehicle (EV) rebate program administered by the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources to support the adoption of electric vehicles by Ocean State drivers. Through DRIVE, qualified Rhode Island residents interested in purchasing or leasing an EV are able to apply for a financial rebate of up to $2,500, based upon vehicle battery capacity.

Modeled closely on existing rebate programs offered in other states, DRIVE offers the potential to increase the total number of EVs on Rhode Island roadways by 20-35%. Already, the January-launched program has reserved $17,500 in incentives for seven new EV owners!

A total of $200,000 has been allocated to this program. If you are interested in buying or leasing an EV in Rhode Island be sure to  check out DRIVE!

Program Spotlight:
A new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) pilot program will provide up to $20 million in vouchers to small businesses seeking technical expertise in clean technology development and commercialization. By way of the vouchers, small businesses will be able to request technical support from DOE national labs. Technical assistance can include addressing technical problems, testing and validating technologies, developing and testing unique materials, conducting modeling and analyses, prototyping, developing engineering designs, field-testing, and much more!

Five national labs have been selected to pilot this program: Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, National Renewable Energy Lab, Berkeley Lab, and Sandia National Lab. More than 100 small businesses will receive $50,000 to $300,000 in vouchers to exchange for national lab technical assistance or collaborative research. All assistance is meant to support the development of technology in the following areas: advanced manufacturing, bioenergy, buildings, fuel cells, geothermal, solar, water power, wind and vehicles. Please visit the program website or the Oak Ridge website for more information and voucher competition details.
