Join us this Sunday at 1:30 pm, just before our Survivor Speaker at 2:00 pm, for a performance by one of our extremely talented LAMOTH Ambassadors of Music and Memory. These teenage pianists were selected for their talent, advocacy and commitment to Holocaust commemoration. The students will perform on the historic Bluthner piano in LAMOTH's Holocaust and Music exhibit, which before the Holocaust belonged to a Jewish musician in Germany named Alfred Sendrey.

Visas to Freedom: Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the Refugees of World War II

LAMOTH is proud to announce the opening on January 22 of Visas to Freedom: Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the Refugees of World War II, an exhibition celebrating the courageous actions of Holocaust rescuer Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Sousa Mendes was the Portuguese Consul General stationed in Bordeaux, France in 1940. His government had issued strict orders to all its diplomats to deny visas to Jews and other refugees seeking to escape German-occupied Europe through Portugal. Sousa Mendes defied these orders and issued life-saving Portuguese visas to thousands of people in May and June of 1940. The exhibit of original visas, photographs and other artifacts from the Sousa Mendes family as well as families that survived thanks to the diplomat's help is in partnership with the Sousa Mendes Foundation, who loaned LAMOTH many of the artifacts.
In June 2013, filmmaker Semyon Pinkhasov followed a group of Sousa Mendes visa recipient families, along with members of the Sousa Mendes family, as they embarked on a pilgrimage retracing their families' footsteps of 73 years earlier. They were "searching for Sousa Mendes" - looking for traces of a lost history in an effort to understand their personal pasts.
This French film with English subtitles, directed by Joel Santoni and starring Bernard Lecoq in the role of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, won Audience Choice Award for "Best Narrative Feature" at both the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival and the San Diego Jewish Film Festival in 2014.

Please join us this Sunday at 2:00 pm for a talk byHolocaust Survivor and LAMOTH Survivor Advisory Board member Dana Schwartz. Born in 1935 in Poland, Dana and her family were forced out of their apartment and placed into the Lvov ghetto, where she lived with her parents, grandmother, uncle and a family friend in two small rooms. Dana and her mother later went into hiding with fake identification papers, but her father perished in a camp. Dana arrived in the United States at the age of fourteen and has been devoted to educating people about the Holocaust. She has conducted approximately 200 Survivor video interviews for both LAMOTH and the Shoah Foundation, beginning in the early 1990s.
