Carol to Visit Hanako in Japan

EAI founder Carol Buckley will travel to Japan in early March to meet with the Inokashira Park Zoo in Tokyo about the living conditions of Hanako, the zoo's solitary Asian elephant.

Captured in Thailand as a two-year-old baby, Hanako, who is now 68, has been living in a sterile concrete enclosure for more than six decades. It has been reported that she shows signs of digestive problems and depression.

This invitation is the first indication that the zoo is open to discussing Hanako's living conditions. The visit will enable Carol to make a full assessment of her current situation. Possible options include moving Hanako to a sanctuary in Thailand, moving her to another zoo in Japan or making vast improvements to her current exhibit at the Inokashira Park Zoo.

EAI to Consult with Vietnam's Elephant Conservation Center

The Elephant Conservation Center  in Vietnam has requested EAI's help in instituting more humane management practices by exploring the possibility of converting to chain free.

Carol has been asked by respected NGO Animals Asia  to travel to ECC in April to consult with facility staff.
