Signing Ceremony
Susan
Please welcome, Susan! We held a signing ceremony for her at our office in Georgetown where many staff and volunteers were privileged to meet her. During the ceremony we pledged to do all we can to assist her in completing her requirements for homeownership, including completing her sweat equity hours and her family services curriculum. We hope this first step will lead to a new affordable home for Susan and her great-nephew in the near future. 
Construction Leaders Wanted
Over the next four months we will be hosting hundreds of volunteers from colleges, universities, churches, and businesses from near and far.

We are looking for skilled construction volunteers who can serve with us by leading other volunteers of all skill levels on our build sites.

Crew Leader: Lead volunteers to complete a specific task on a build site. One day minimum commitment.

Site Leader: Lead volunteers for an entire week on a particular site. 

Site Supervisor Loan Program: If you own a construction company, please consider loaning a skilled site supervisor to help us run a site for a week during one of our busiest volunteer seasons.

Spotlight On ... 
Shannon Bull
AmeriCorps service member, Shannon Bull, of Milton currently serves on our Construrtction Crew. Shannon recently completed a degree in architectural engineering technology. She has aspirations of starting her own nonprofit to aid the homeless in housing and believes that serving with Habitat is helping her gain the knowledge and experience necessary to reach her ultimate goal. Shannon said, "The most rewarding part about serving here is knowing I am already making a difference." Thanks for your servant leadership, Shannon!

Kevin and Guests
Executive Director, Kevin Gilmore, welcomed nine Seaford community leaders to take part in a Sussex County Habitat Strategic Plan Discussion. This was the first in a county-wide series of small group meetings to review SCHFH's business model and strategies for greater impact in the county. Kevin sought input about the focus and content of the plan as well as strategies to achieve the stated goals.  Seaford school board member, Jeff Benson, graciously hosted the discussion and Jose Quinones generously shared his conference room at Vista Linda Real Estate Services for the event. Guests were given an opportunity to sign a board that will be used in a Habitat home build in Seaford.

The Repair Report
In September, 2015, the Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA) reported 4,097 substandard housing units in Sussex County, of which 3,209 (78%) are owner occupied. Sussex County Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) is working to improve these substandard housing conditions in order to help low income homeowners throughout the county age in place with dignity. Laurel homeowners are particularly encouraged to apply at this time as special funding is now available for assistance through Habitat's major or minor repairs programs.
