At our recent Founder's Day awards presentation ceremony, I felt we were all inspired by the accomplishments of the programs Porto and PCI have supported over the last 55 years.  There was not a dry eye in the house as the program administrators gave us their annual reports and we witnessed firsthand the lives they have touched. This issue of Shifting Sands will be published soon after our 2016 Founder's Day celebration, the time when Porto Charities and Porto Caravan distribute the funds we have collected over the past year to the organizations that we consider work to support in many different ways the life and development of people with intellectual disabilities. Fishing, anyone?

Have you heard about the Special Angler Foundation? Joe Smith, parent of Travis Smith (PVI, Class of 2015) is one of the founders of the Special Angler Foundation and he has informed us that there is an upcoming Queen of the Bay fishing tournament in Cape Charles, VA, from July 27-30, on a pier. Joe is extending an invitation to any of our young adults with intellectual disabilities who would like to participate. Click here for more details.

Porto Derby -- SAVE THE DATE!

The Porto Derby is back! Mark your calendars for May 14th and plan to attend this fun evening. Our MCs are planning wild pony races & fun trivia and they encourage attendees to come dressed in their best derby attires, hats & all. The evening will begin with Mass at 5 pm followed by the derby activities, all at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Dinner will be by Wildflour Caterers. An E-vite will go out in March for you to RSVP to the event..look for it!

--Workshop: Employment Opportunities for Individuals with Special Needs
Thursday, February 25th  I  7:00-9:00pm
The J - 8900 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax VA 22031

This workshop will showcase employers who have employees with special needs, supportive employment organizations and other resources for individuals with special needs seeking employment. There will also be an employment-focused resource fair.   This workshop is not a job fair , but rather an opportunity to hear about working employment models to get possibilities and ideas flowing. This workshop is open to all at no cost.

--Workshop: Transition to Employment 
Thursday, March 3rd  I  6:30-8:30pm 
Alexandria Community Services Board - 
4480 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22303  
 
This is a FREE workshop for families with transitioning youth ages 14-22. Transition to employment will help families plan for employment for their child with a disability after high school. Participants will learn from a presentation by the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) about services and eligibility. A panel of three employment services organizations will explain the services they offer and the process for job development and training. Pizza and drinks will be provided.  

--Adapted Sports, Recreation and Travel Fair for Individuals with Disabilities
Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 1 to 4pm
James Lee Community Center, 2855-A Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA

For ALL individuals of ALL ages with ANY disability living in Northern Virginia.  This fair will provide information on adapted sports, recreation and travel opportunities,  including adapted summer camps. See flyer.
Sponsored by Parents Of Autistic Children of Northern Virginia (POAC-NoVA),the Autism Society of Northern Virginia (ASNV) and other support organizations for individuals with disabilities, in coordination with the Fairfax County Therapeutic Recreation Services Department.
