GGAHU Golf Tournament May 9
By Ron Huppert, Education & Programs Chair

The GGAHU Golf Tournament will be May 9, and we're very pleased to announce that it will be held at the beautiful Oakhurst Country Club in Clayton. We have a lot of great events planned. Be sure to get there early and take some practice swings at the driving range, then enjoy the breakfast burrito bar.  The format is a "best ball" scramble, and you can scramble to the "Bloody Mary" stand before heading out with your lunch to enjoy on the course. The beverage carts will be roaming, so have no fear of thirst, and mulligans will be available to keep your scores low!

Besides the "Longest Drive", and "Closest to the hole", there will be some other surprises for you. If you don't golf, don't worry, it's best ball!  Grab a cold drink and enjoy the day. Buy some raffle tickets and join your fellow health coverage professionals for a post-game cocktail and refreshments at the club house, with its great views of the Diablo Valley. If you only play in one golf tournament this year, this is one.

Please see the GGAHU website for details and directions. Sponsorship are available.

NAHU's Capitol Conference
by Colleen Callahan, Legislative Chair

February is Cap Conference month in Washington , DC. This year we have 13 GGAHU members registered to attend, including a few first timers!

The conference runs from February 22-24. NAHU has a great list of speakers lined up for us. We can always count on terrific content. We are in the process of making our appointments to meet with our legislators. Since GGAHU covers a great deal of territory we request appointments with Representatives: DeSaulnier, Lee, Pelosi, Swalwell, Speier, and Huffman.

This year some of the issues we hope to address relate to clients continuing to have access to licensed benefit professionals and removing broker commissions from the MLR. We also will talk about the importance of choice in health plans and repealing the Cadillac Tax.

I hope our ideas and opinions will be carefully considered. Wish us luck and hope for good weather while we are there!

Fresh Ideas from Sacramento Lawmakers
By Phil Lee, PAC/HUPAC Chair

GGAHU Board members were among the many citizens who attended a Town Hall meeting at the Community Hall of the Lafayette Library on Feb. 3rd. This meeting was organized by these two local lawmakers to share with the public their latest efforts in Sacramento, and to solicit feedback.

Assemblywoman Catharine Baker, an attorney and Republican, won her seat in 2014. State Senator Steve Glazer, a former Orinda Mayor and Democrat, won his Senate seat (which was vacated by Mark DeSaulnier) in a 2015 mid-term run-off election. With the help of the CAHU PAC our association was an early supporter of Assemblywoman Baker and Senator Glazer from the beginning of their campaigns for office in 2014.

Assemblywoman Catharine Baker (San Ramon) and Senator Steve Glazer (Walnut Creek) at the Lafayette Town Hall.

Although from different political parties Baker and Glazer agree on many issues such as opposition to Jerry Brown's bullet train, support for banning BART strikes and recognition that the State must address billions of dollars of pension debt. They also support transparency in local government collective bargaining.

Both lawmakers stress "clean, transparent government" and lead by example by waiving "per diem" awards which many Sacramento lawmakers take for granted and pocket at taxpayer's expense.

Every year, Sacramento lawmakers crank out thousands of new bills, many of which are voted into law. After only 9 months in office, Senator Glazer reports that he has already signed over 1,300 bills.

GGAHU's legislative advocates, Julianne Broyles and Michael Belote, are very familiar with this volume of legislation. Each year they laboriously read and analyze each one of these bills to pick out those that may be harmful to the health insurance market, and to classify and prioritize them for needed action.

Our support for these lawmakers allows our association to inform them of the details and consequences, good or bad, of some of the most important or damaging bills. They can sometimes even be helpful to us when we need sponsors for badly needed corrections to existing laws.

Together, Glazer and Baker form a potent, bipartisan pair that can help change Sacramento politics. They set an example of the power of finding common ground and working together. GGAHU members who make donations to the CAHU PAC can feel good about supporting these two outstanding legislators.

Transforming LPRT's Old-Fogey Image
By Kevin Roberts, Communications Chair

The Leading Producers Round Table (LPRT) was formed in 1942 to recognize successful underwriters of Accident & Health Insurance. This year's deadline for LPRT applications is March 31. So why should this matter to you? There are plenty of reasons.

Today, LPRT is committed to being the premier program for insurance brokers and reps. At the National Convention in Albuquerque this summer LPRT is having and all day exclusive event for Soaring and Golden Eagle qualifiers.

LPRT Golden Eagle Statue proudly displayed on our Past President, Hazel Bright's desk in her office.

You can get a better sense of the quality of the program from GGAHU Past President, Hazel Bright, who attended the event last year at the convention in New Orleans. "It was really, quite extra-ordinary, they sent out a questionnaire prior to the event asking how you; market, sell and work at your agency. At the event we received a personalized packet with the strengths and weaknesses based on how we answered the questions. It outlined how you can be more effective as a communicator and as a sales person."

"In the afternoon they had Tom Harte - Landmark Benefits, Inc. and Jennifer Borislow - Borislow Insurance, spoke about how they built their agencies from individual producers to agencies with multiple producers and staff employees. They discussed their emphasis, what markets they focus on and services they provide. It was fascinating, I'd never experienced anything like that. The program was all about professional development."
In order to stay relevant after 74 years, LPRT has clearly shown itself as place to stay current with the cutting edge trends and learn how to fit them to your personality and your business.

In speaking with NAHU's LPRT chair, Suzy Johnson, she added, "I would just say....."If you haven't seen what NAHU's Leading Producers Roundtable (LPRT) is up to lately you have been missing out! The exclusive event for Leading Producers hosted as part of the annual convention is outstanding!"

Here is the link to get you started: http://www.nahu.org/members/LPRT/awards-lprt.cfm

Suzy added. "Hope you complete the application...You will be glad you did!"
