what happens in italy...

Shortly after the new year, fifteen Sage students, faculty, guests, and an administrator were treated to a wonderful ten-day trip to Italy!  Through courses on Commerce & Culture in Italy (BUS 348-11/MBA 599-90/SOC 348-90), a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity became a reality as participants toured Italy traveling to Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Bologna, Umbria, Perugia, and Venice.

This short-term study abroad travel course included a focus on Italian products including wine and olive oil, fine glass and crystal, jewelry and leather. Participants experienced the slow food movement at two pranzos in Umbria and Perugia, engaged in cultural traditions, watched Italian masters create a Murano glass product on the island of Murano, and witnessed a demonstration of cameo making in Naples.

While seeing so many sites, the Sage representatives learned about culture, food, commerce, art history, architecture, government, Italian history, language, and so much more!  Thanks to the work of so many at Sage for making this experience available to the community!

Participants blogged about many of their experiences.  If you wish to learn more, please visit the blog.

April is Sexual Assault
Awareness Month

  • 4/6: The Hunting Ground screening and panel discussion, 5 pm in the Opalka Gallery (refreshments, followed by film and panel).
The Hunting Ground, written and directed by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering, is a documentary about two University of North Carolina students, Andrea Pino and Annie Clark, who reported they were raped while enrolled in school - this led them to file a Title IX complaint against the College. The film includes footage and first-person testimonies of Andrea and Annie as they attempt to pursue - despite incredible push back, harassment, and traumatic aftermath - both their education and justice.

Among the issues raised by critics are the film's portrayal of one man as a rapist, while not disclosing that the university and the police had found him not responsible for the sexual assault of which he was accused.
