Jesus asked, "Who do you say that I am?"
~ from Matthew 16, Mark, Luke 9
Dear Friends~
You've got some HOMEWORK to do! Yep, HOMEWORK! On Sunday we make the move from Jesus saying, "I AM... the light of the world, the gate, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth and the life, and the bread of life"- to Jesus asking, first the crowd gathered, and then Peter specifically,
"Who do YOU say that I am?"
The crowds will answer:
Jesus is like John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
Peter will answer: You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.
I don't know about you, but I think that more often than not, I'm with the crowds. Of course that is not what I say out-loud; in public, I am quick to join in Peter's response- and most of the time I think I believe it. But if actions speak louder than words, and they do(!), then I must admit that many of my actions on a day to day basis do not confess that Jesus is Messiah, the Son of the Living God. I believe that this is a growing edge for most of us- connecting our Sunday morning worship lives to Monday morning.
So here's the homework: What do we mean when we say with Peter, that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God? Or that Jesus is, from the Apostles' Creed, God's only Son, our Lord. Or in the words of the Nicene Creed, God from God, Light from Light... begotten, not made. Jesus asks, "Who do YOU say that I am?" How would you describe Jesus to someone who never heard of him before? To a child...or adult...or friend...or stranger who happened to ask you about Jesus.
Think about it... then come and worship THIS Sunday as we begin to explore this question as asked by none other than JESUS!
See you in church
~
