CAIrecapCAM Construction Activity Index Recap - 2014 1st Quarter

Construction Activity Index

The severity of the winter weather across the state of Michigan and the 48 percent decline in the value of contract awards for start of non-residential construction building, during the first quarter of 2014, were confirmed by CAM's membership responses to the Construction Activity Index survey during that calendar period. As portrayed in Chart #1 by the all variables index, a composite measure of change in all aspects of internal operations, the reading of 58.6 remained unchanged from the previous quarter. Growth in bids on projects were offset by weakness in project awards, increasing concerns over rising materials prices, a seasonal downturn in hiring, and the accompanying fractional decline in labor rates from the prior three months. According to CAM's News Division, there was a 59 percent increase in requests for bids published during the first quarter from the preceding fourth quarter, and Detroit area building materials prices were up at an annual rate of 2.3 percent according to Engineering - News Record field reporters.
