raedumkeUnique Architecture Book Collection to Be Unveiled at Birmingham Library - June 11

The Michigan Architectural Foundation is proud to announce the installation of The Rae Dumke Collection:100 Essential Architecture Books at the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The public is encouraged to attend the celebration from 5-7pm and entry is complimentary with RSVP to [email protected].

This pilot collection will be housed at the Baldwin Public Library and there will be a designated section dedicated for the collection. The books, chosen from hundreds of nominations from architects for the best titles, will be available statewide to the public through the Michigan Library Network.

Stephen Vogel, FAIA, Professor and Past Dean for the School of Architecture at University of Detroit-Mercy will be the guest speaker for this event, which celebrates both the unique collection and the precedence for the promotion of architecture set by Rae Dumke, Hon. AIA.

Throughout her career, Rae Dumke has been a leader and pioneer in efforts to promote architecture and architects. Rae spent from October 1967 to December 2010 in the employ of AIA Michigan, AIA Detroit, and the Michigan Architectural Foundation (MAF). She served as the Executive Director of all three organizations from 1984 until her retirement in 2010. She was invested in the community, and shared her leadership experience with fellow association executives nationally, as well as with the members of the association she headed.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the profession of Architecture at the local, state, and national levels of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), she was granted Honorary Membership by its national organization in 1990. This is one of the highest honors that AIA can bestow upon a non-architect. Most importantly, Rae understood that being the Executive Director of three nonprofit professional organizations was not just about running a business; rather it was about people, in serving them well and bringing out the best in them to benefit the individual, the profession and society.

To view the collection titles, please visit the Baldwin Library website. The Mission of the Michigan Architectural Foundation is to promote architecture to the public. To learn more, please click here

The Safety Leadership & Professional Development Conference will provide a forum for safety, health and environmental (SH&E) professionals to:

  • Identify key issues facing SH&E professionals today and sustainably into the future;
  • Expand participant's knowledge and professional skill-set;
  • Help participants prepare for challenges encountered in the SH&E field;
  • Engage in dialog and/or discourse concerning our profession; and,
  • Identify current trends and emerging issues relevant to our profession.

Description of Presentation for Evaluation:

Brochure Description:

Provide a 50-word (max) description of the presentation to be included in the conference brochure and website/email announcement(s).

Biographical Data & References

Provide a 150-word (max) description of your professional credentials and why you are the presenter/facilitator for your presentation.  Please include as a minimum:
  • Your name and contact information, including email address;

Note on PowerPoint:  PowerPoint slides are a powerful teaching tool, but can also be a significant distraction if slides are too wordy, not pertinent to the presentation, or end up being a verbal crutch for the presenter.  Slides are a complement to your presentation....they should not BE the presentation.  We ask that you submit your PowerPoint slide deck to the Leadership Committee for review and feedback no less than 2-weeks before the Leadership & Professional Development Conference.

Speaker and Proposal Information:

  • Presentation skills and experience of the speaker; and,
  • Desirability of the topic to the conference attendees
  • All speakers will be notified by e-mail if the proposal has been accepted for the CAM / ASSE Leadership & Professional Development Conference 2014.

The Conference is tentatively scheduled for December 3, 2014.  Speaker submissions need to be submitted to Tracey Alfonsi, CAM Safety Director at [email protected].  Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
