HOFMichigan Construction Hall of Fame Presents Distinguished Constructor Awards

On October 24, 2013 the 11th Annual Michigan Construction Hall of Fame Distinguished Constructor Awards Banquet was held at Ferris State University in Big Rapids. This year, five individuals were presented with the Distinguished Constructor Award: Robert & Karen Schroeder of Mayberry Homes in East Lansing; Linda Vos-Graham of Vos Glass, Inc. in Grand Rapids; Eileen McCarthy of McCarthy & Smith Construction in Farmington Hills; and E. Edward Williams of Edwards Glass Company in Livonia.

CAM Member Eileen McCarthy was born into the construction business, McCarthy & Smith Construction. She received Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Architecture from the University of Michigan, later turning her focus from design to project management. After graduation she accepted employment from Turner Construction in Chicago, later transferring to their Detroit office. Several years later, Eileen joined forces with her brother, Bill McCarthy, to become partner and vice president of the family business, McCarthy & Smith. Eileen has placed a high priority on mentoring students and recent graduates interested in a career in the construction industry, particularly women. She is very involved with CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women Detroit) and AGC (Associated General Contractors of Michigan).

CAM Member E. Edward Williams, known fondly as "Uncle Ed" to family and friends, is the retired president and CEO of Edwards Glass Company in Livonia. Beginning in the induustry in 1952, Ed formed Iovan Glass Company with his brother-in-law; three years later he purchased American Glass Company and launched Edwards Glass Company, providing commercial, residential and automotive glass applications. Ed's study of the jobsite led to "The Glazing Contractors' Estimating Manual," and in the 1970s Ed was instrumental in creating and disseminating the Michigan Safety Glazing Code, based on the new federal standards and guidelines for the use of safety glass in hazardous locations. Ed served on several Boards and Committees including being president and founder of the Glazing Contractors Association with Sam Kline in 1988.
