This is illustrated by the impact of the industry activity on internal business conditions among members and their outlook outlined by the direction of indices portrayed in the accompanying Charts...

McCarthyCAM Member Eileen McCarthy First Woman to be Inducted Into Construction Hall of Fame

Eileen McCarthy will be the first woman inducted into the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame. With nearly 30 years industry experience, McCarthy has seen every aspect of construction. Her roles over the years - project manager, field engineer, project engineer, manager of purchasing (to name a few) - have kept her adorned in a hard hat and boots for a good chunk of her career. Now, as vice president of both McCarthy & Smith, Inc. and Daniels Building Company in Farmington Hills, McCarthy has active roles in the operation of the nearly 50-year-old full-service construction firm her father founded, as well as the 3-year-old Daniels Building Company, which focuses on federal and state work. Her induction to the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame will take place this October.

The Construction Hall of Fame, located in the Granger Center for Construction and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) Center at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, serves as a permanent installation for students, staff and visitors to honor the achievements of leaders in Michigan's construction industry.

Having earned Bachelor and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of Michigan, McCarthy said she'd always been drawn to a career in the industry. "I thought at some point I'd pursue an architecture career," she admitted. "But Turner recruited me before I'd even graduated. By the time I'd graduated, I was focused on something more in a management scenario, which is why my career took the direction it did."

McCarthy & Smith does work in the cultural, education, government, healthcare and residential markets with several recent projects in the federal sector. About five years ago, the firm began working in higher-education, which continues to be a strong market in terms of funding, especially at the university level. Daniels Building Company, of which McCarthy holds minority ownership and an important management role, has done significant work for Veterans Association hospitals.

Significant factors in McCarthy's selection for the Hall of Fame, in addition to her professional career, were her involvements with industry organizations such as her recent appointment to the CREW Detroit Executive Board and the Association of General Contractors. In addition, McCarthy has been actively involved with the nonprofit Sweet Dreamzzz Detroit for over 11 years, holding both board and chair positions.
