New Orleans Named #1 For Nightlife, #2 For Dining In North America By Travel + Leisure
NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans has been named the #2 city in North America for visitors according to a Travel + Leisure reader's survey. New Orleans ranked second to Charleston but above San Francisco, New York City and Chicago.
Readers ranked cities based on categories such as arts, shopping, dining, romantic ambience and friendliness. New Orleans was chosen as the number two destination in America, ranking #1 in the world for nightlife and #2 in the nation for dining. Travel + Leisure touted both historic dining options and innovative new jazz clubs and bars in the Crescent City as reasons for its high ranking. In 2014 and 2015, New Orleans was named the #2 city in North America as part of the Travel + Leisure "World's Best" annual survey.
"New Orleans is flourishing with both historic establishments that visitors have always loved and cosmopolitan new hotels, restaurants and cocktail programs," said Stephen Perry, President and CEO, New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Only in New Orleans can you experience the oldest restaurant in America alongside innovative James Beard Award-winning chefs, or see Grammy Award-winning artists perform and then wander into our streets to discover a new musician. Recognition from such an esteemed travel publication is a testament to our commitment to hospitality and the hard work we do every day to create an unparalleled travel experience for our visitors."
"New Orleans is a consistent choice for travelers because of its authenticity, historic charm, and beauty," said Mark Romig, President and CEO of the New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Corporation (NOTMC). "Those qualities allow us to deliver on a fantastic experience and we are honored the readers of Travel + Leisure have singled out our nightlife and dining."
The designation as one of the "Best Cities in North America" is New Orleans' most recent recognition in a string of accolades including one of The Washington Post's "10 Best Food Cities in America," the number one "Most Visited Destination Across the Globe" of 2015 by AFAR magazine, one of the "Best Big Cities in the U.S." by Condé Nast Traveler and more

An Architect and His City: Henry Howard's New Orleans, 1837-1884
One of the nineteenth century's most prolific architects but also, until recently, one of the most historically elusive, Henry Howard (1818-1884) called New Orleans home for nearly fifty years. During this time, the Irish native established his career, left an indelible mark on the landscape of Louisiana, and witnessed the growth of one of America's greatest cities. An Architect and His City: Henry Howard's New Orleans, 1837-1884, examines the city of New Orleans as experienced by Howard.
When Howard arrived in New Orleans in 1837, the city was the third largest in America and faced an economic crisis and a Yellow Fever epidemic. Over the next several decades, Howard's career was shaded by the events of his city: from the boom of the antebellum years, through the Civil War, to the challenges of Reconstruction and beyond.
A companion to the new book Henry Howard: Louisiana's Architect (THNOC and Princeton Architectural Press, 2015),this exhibition will give special consideration to the city's architecture, urban growth, and municipal improvements. Featured items include maps, rare books, and manuscripts as well as historical and contemporary photographs, including images by Robert S. Brantley, the architectural photographer and author of the newly released Howard book.

Recipe of the Week
Our Master of Public Health student intern Sarah Refvem provided this week's recipe, along with many of our past recipes. She believes food and cooking can bring people together and strengthen communities. She wants to share her passion for taking time out of our busy lives to care for ourselves through our food choices and the act of preparing meals, while supporting local farmers, businesses, and each other. See what Sarah has in store for us this week.

Grapefruit Marmalade
Ingredients
  • 2 ½ pounds grapefruit
  • 6 cups water
  • 5 cups sugar
Directions
Place a small plate in your freezer - this is to test the doneness of the marmalade later.
Use a peeler to peel the zest away from the grapefruit. Slice the zest as thinly as you can.
Trim a small amount of the top and base away from the grapefruit. Place the grapefruit with this cut side down on the board so it's sitting on a flat surface. Starting at the top, cut the white pith away from the flesh (it is very bitter!). Continue working your way around the grapefruit until the pith is gone.
Cut the fruit in quarters, then slice the quarters into ¼ inch-thick slices.
Combine the sliced fruit, sliced zest, water, and sugar in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Stir until it reaches a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pot, and continue to simmer until the mixture thickens and reads 220 degrees on the thermometer.
Test the doneness by spooning a small amount of marmalade onto the frozen plate you prepared earlier. The marmalade should gel up very quickly to a set but spreadable consistency.
Ladle the marmalade into clean, sanitized jars and attach the lids and rings. Process in a boiling water bath canner for 10 minutes. Turn the heat off of the canner, and let the jars sit in the water for 5 minutes more. Remove the jars carefully from the water and allow to cool to room temperature on a wire rack. It's important not to disturb the jars during this process - and it's ideal to leave them at least 10-12 hours before moving them. Once they're cooled, check the seals by pressing your finger on the top of the lid. It shouldn't move at all: if it does, the jar hasn't properly. If it doesn't move, you're ready to open or store your jars! Marmalade will keep sealed for 1 year or opened and refrigerated for 3 months.
Note: Alternatively, if you don't want to can your marmalade, just let it cool to room temp and refrigerate, it will keep for 3 months.
Makes 6 half pints

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.

    Almost Innocent by Sheila Bosworth
"A remarkable first novel. Like the old master Henry James, Sheila Bosworth uses the chilling device of using the mirror of innocence to reflect evil. It is a lovely achievement, a superior one."-Walker Percy Clay-Lee Calvert is the love child of two people who are as beautiful as models in a magazine but whose similarity ends there. Her father, Rand, is an artist-easygoing, dreamy, principled, and chronically jobless. Her mother, Constance, is the blue-blooded, pampered, delicate but determined daughter of a state supreme court justice. How their intense passion for each other plays out against the sumptuousness and decay of 1950s New Orleans is something to which no innocent should be privy. In Sheila Bosworth's mesmerizing first novel, the era, the place, the people, of Clay-Lee's childhood all form an air as real as our own pasts, alternately dim and indelible, where everyone bears some guilt, and all are almost innocent.
Join Ogden Museum docent and former teacher Maureen O'Dwyer for a lively discussion about Southern art, literature and culture. This club will meet approximately every 6 weeks. Members may arrive at 5:30 p.m. Discussion will begin at 6 p.m. and last approximately one hour. The Book Club is FREE and open exclusively to OMSA members, but to attend please contact Ellen Balkin, education coordinator, at [email protected]

Marisa Acocella Marchetto - ANN TENNA
Meet celebrated New Yorker cartoonist Marisa Acocella Marchetto when she presents and signs ANN TENNA, her brilliant, funny, and wildly imaginative first novel - the story of an influential gossip columnist brought face-to-face with her higher self and a challenge to change her life for the better.
Glamorous, superconnected Ann Tenna is the founder of Eyemauler, a New York City-based Web site that's always the first to dish the most up-to-the-minute dirt on celebrities and ordinary folks alike. Ann has ascended to the zenith of the New York media scene, attended by groups of grovelers all too willing to be trampled on by her six-inch Giuseppe Zanottis if it means better seats at the table.
But as high as her success has taken her, Ann has actually fallen far very far from her true self. It takes a near-fatal freak accident on her birthday April Fool's Day and an intervention from her cosmic double in a realm beyond our own to make Ann realize the full cost of the humanity she has lost.
Told with laugh-out-loud humor, spot-on dialogue (including via cameo appearances from Coco Chanel, Gianni Versace, and Jimi Hendrix, to name just a few), and stunning, full-color artwork, Ann Tenna is a timely, necessary tale for our overly media-cated times: the newest, much-anticipated adventure from a supremely gifted artist at the height of her powers.

Northern Italy Flight & Honey Bee Catering, Wednesday, February 24th, 6-8pm
Linda Smith of Frederick Wildman Imports will be in the house tonight pouring a flight of northern Italian wines from Piemonte, Lombardia and the Veneto. We have chosen 4 gems that demonstrate the focus of her portfolio on artisanal family owned wineries that produce small quantities of high-quality wine.  And since Italian wine is always best experienced with food, David Phillips of Honeybee Catering will be in the house serving up 2 exciting dishes to pair with the wines. For the list of wines and/or to reserve your spot, go to Northern Italy.  Reservations are required, $20, limited to 25 spots.

Sold Out! The 2012 Oregon Pinot Show, 6 Wines from an Epic Vintage, February 25, 2016
Vintage is everything in winemaking.  The different expressions of the same grape that a vineyard produces from a rainy spring, a hot and humid summer or a cool fall is what makes wine so intriguing. And while good winemakers can make great wine in bad vintages, it's nice when mother nature cooperates and gives you a picture perfect growing season.  Such was the 2012 vintage in Oregon.  Some have called it an epic harvest that could lead to one of the best vintages in the history of the 50-year-old region.   The season was ideal from start to finish, with even ripening and good yields matching quantity with quality - resulting in rich, almost opulent wines.  Join James Moises in the this seated tasting that takes an in-depth look at one of Oregon's most recent highly rated vintages.  We'll be tasting 6 Pinot Noirs from small artisanal Willamette Valley producers paired cheeses selected and presented by Casey Foote.  $40 - For more information and reservations click here,  The 2012 Oregon Pinot Show

Friday, February 26, 6-8pm - The Americas with Morgan Stroud. We'll be pouring four of our favorites from North & South America!  This tasting is free and no reservations are required.

6 Spots Remaining!!  Vini d'Italia, Nord vs. Sud, March 10, 6-8pm
6 Italian Wines, 6 Italian Cheeses, 2 Wine Guys, 2 Cheese Mongers, 2 Competitions and a whole lot of fun...Antonio Molesini, Italian Wine Specialist for Republic National, Chris Noyes of The Winebow Group plus Justin Trosclair and Casey Foote of St. James Cheese, go head to head (or may head to toe?) in this educational, fun and delicious wine & cheese showdown. Chris has always been a champion for the underrated wines of southern Italy while Tuscan-born Antonio believes northern and central Italian wines to be the most superior in the world (he has only just a bit of Italian pride!)  And to make this even more interesting, I've asked 2 of the cities top cheese mongers to go head to head as well and each choose an Italian cheese to pair with the wines. For more information and to book your spot go to  Vini d'Italia   Reservations are required, $40, limited to 23 people.

MAYOR LANDRIEU'S OFFICE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO HOST BUSINESS INFORMATION SESSIONS
NEW ORLEANS - On Wednesday, February 17, 2016, Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Office of Economic Development will kick off another series of Business Information Sessions designed to connect local entrepreneurs and business owners with useful tools and resources to grow their businesses.

"These quarterly sessions are key to helping our local business owners and entrepreneurs thrive in the City's growing entrepreneurial hub," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "When our businesses succeed, our economy strengthens, more residents gain jobs, and we grow the tax base that pays for essential City services."

These sessions allow interested entrepreneurs and business owners to learn more about business opportunities. One session will take place in each City Council district. All are open to the public, and individuals can attend any or all sessions.

District A Councilmember Susan G. Guidry said, "The Administration's Business Information Sessions recognize the City's thriving entrepreneurial spirit and provide excellent opportunities for our local businesses to grow and connect with our festival culture."

District B Councilmember LaToya Cantrell said, "These information sessions provide a win-win opportunity by helping our emerging entrepreneurs to expand and grow alongside our City's unique and wonderful festivals. I hope that this series will also further diversify the City's workforce through increasing participation in the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program among small, women-owned, minority-owned, and LGBT-owned local businesses."

District C Councilmember Nadine M. Ramsey said, "The festival season is an enjoyable and potentially profitable time for our residents.  I am encouraged by the administration providing the crucial information needed to facilitate access for all citizens to participate in the wonderful economic opportunities presented by the numerous festivals held in New Orleans."

District D Councilmember Jared C. Brossett said, "In this period of great economic growth in the city of New Orleans, it is more important than ever that we take the initiative in expanding economic opportunity. These sessions are a perfect example of how municipal government can be proactive in making sure that all of our entrepreneurs have access to the same knowledge and information. Through a series of steps like these, our business leadership community becomes deeper and more diverse and our economy and our city thus become stronger."

District E Councilmember James A. Gray said, "New Orleans is famous for its festivals, and both locals and tourists spend a lot of money on food, art and entertainment. Anyone who bakes a great pie, paints, makes jewelry and more can create or grow a small business. The Mayor's business sessions are a terrific opportunity for anyone interested in working and making money on the festival circuit."

Ogden After Hours - Carol Franclick for more info...
    05:30 PM - 08:00 PM
Carol Fran is approaching six decades as a jump, soul, and swamp blues singer and pianist. Named an NEA National Heritage Fellow in 2013, Carol Fran was born in 1933 in Lafayette, LA. She first began her career as a teenager singing jump blues with the Don Conway Orchestra. Eventually, Fran moved to New Orleans and married saxophonist Bob Francois, shortening her new last name to "Fran." Becoming a fixture on the Bourbon Street club circuit, Fran cut her first record in 1957 for Excello Records, a single titled "Emmitt Lee." Fran became a featured vocalist with blues legend Guitar Slim in 1958, and following his death sang with Lee Dorsey and Joe Tex.
In the 1980's Fran married blues guitarist Clarence Hollimon and relocated to Texas. Together with Hollimon, she toured extensively in the U.S and Europe, released three albums, and taught blues to students through Texas Folk Resources. After Hollimon's death, Fran returned to Louisiana and released a solo album in 2001. Though she suffered a stroke in 2007, Fran returned to the stage in 2008 at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in a performance USA Today described as "potent and poignant." Fran was nominated for a Blues Music Award in 1992 and 2001. She received a Louisiana Governors Arts Award as Folk Artist of the Year in 2006, and in 2008 received a Lafayette City Parish Council Distinguished Citizen Award. In 2012 she received the Slim Harpo Blue award for Female Legend of the Year. Performing in both English and Creole French, her distinct voice and piano style of swamp blues is characterized by laid back vocals and Cajun and Zydeco rhythms. This performance is presented in collaboration with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Louisiana Cultural Vistas Magazine.

SPEAK RED
Heart disease is no match for the power of women's voices. Most women don't notice the symptoms of heart disease until it's too late. That's why heart disease has been called the silent killer. But we won't be silent. Yet, many of these deaths can be prevented.
The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women is the world's largest network of women standing together to save women's lives from heart disease. Millions of women have united to raise their voices about their No. 1 killer. With your help, many more lives can be saved.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

Theatre on Tap Presents
Big Easy Award Winning
LOVE TAPS
Feb 26-28
in New Orleans

Emmy-winning artistic director and choreographer to guide original production

Theatre on Tap's award-winning show Love Taps: An Evening of Romance and Rhythm is hitting the stage and capturing hearts in New Orleans this February in a limited two-weekend revival performance. The impassioned show will delve into the barrier-breaking universal truths of love and rhythm, showing how they connect humanity as one.

The popular, Big Easy Award winner is coming to Nims Black Box Theatre at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) where it will explore stories of fantasy, budding romance, finding courage out of grief, the strength of friendship, and the hope and optimism of youth using the universal languages of love and rhythm. Performances will run February  26, 27, and 28, 2016. Tickets ($18-$35) are available at  theatreontap.com .

Under the direction of Emmy Award and two-time Big Easy Award winning artistic director and principal choreographer Heidi Malnar, performers will bring to life narrative works of dance theatre through tap and live music in an intimate, cabaret-style setting. DITZYLAND

Ricky Graham joins co-comic conspirators Varla Jean Merman and Sean Patterson (THE PRODUCERS) as they skewer Uncle Walt's most treasured animated features! Joining in this very adult send-up of fairy tale madness is Jefferson Turner tinkering on the keys. Ted Mahne from The Times Picayune said: "With sharp wit, DITZYLAND gleefully skewers the House that Mouse built.  It's the campiest place on earth where its cast slips the entire audience a Mickey guaranteeing laughter that might well last throughout the New Year."
This is definitely an ADULT show

KINGFISH IS THE KING OF LENTEN MENUS
Chef Nathan Richard offers menu chock full of seafood

New Orleans, Louisiana-Kingfish Kitchen & Cocktails is now serving a full Lenten menu, available seven days a week through Easter. Chef Nathan Richard has crafted menu items using the bounty of South Louisiana Gulf waters and local farmers. "We are blessed to live in a region that provides us with such delicious foods year round," states Richard. "It's a well known fact that Fridays during Lent are not really sacrifices for Louisiana residents when it comes to food, but something to look forward to, so we wanted to make them extra special at Kingfish." In addition to Richard's Lenten menu items, he has created a Seafood Charcuterie Board. Specially crafted dishes include pickled redfish, crawfish and oyster boudin, smoked catfish terrine, and seafood boulettes.
The Lenten appetizer menu includes "Lil' Eats" such as crawfish boil chowder, Louisiana sportsman's gumbo, crawfish and artichoke gratin, and blackened shrimp and cornbread dressing. "Big Eats," or entrees, include whole Gulf fish, Louisiana shrimp stew, Gulf Coast cioppino, and black drum on the half shell tacos. For the carnivores, Kingfish also offers pepper crusted 14 oz. ribeye, parmesan cured duck breast, and roasted rosemary citrus chicken, as well as fried boudin balls and pulled pork nachos.  "Chef Nathan's heart is rooted in South Louisiana, and his newest menu shares his passions for his Cajun heritage," states Zeid Ammari, Chief Operating Officer of Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts, the parent company of Kingfish. "His extensive background as a butcher, in places all over the world, shines through with his spin on charcuterie. We are excited for him to share his creativity and passions at Kingfish."

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
