Part II -- Voices we can't wait to hear on the radio. Duane Kuiper is a seven-time Emmy award-winning radio and television sportscaster for the San Francisco Giants. Part III -- Voices we can't wait to hear on the radio. Does "Grab some pine, meat!" sound familiar? Seana Hogan is the only bicyclist to win the 3,000-mile Race Across America (RAAM) six times. The 56-year-old Californian's heyday was in the 1990s when she not only dominated the women's field but also placed as high as third, when compared to the men's field. Seana came back last year and led all women, even in the younger categories, and was on track to breaking the record but withdrew some 2000 miles into the race after developing severe saddle-sores. Hogan won't reveal how she plans to avoid the problem in RAAM 2016 but stated she has new methods in mind and is confident of completing the journey from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md. Tales from Spring Training and the
Pink Pony
By David Bush
Retired
San Francisco Chronicle
sports writer David Bush covered spring training for 20-plus years and it was his favorite time of year. His suggestion that spring training last six months, followed by a six-week regular season, was only partially in jest. Below he recalls a venerable spring training water hole, the Pink Pony.
Evenings in the desert were a treasure and most of the memories are of nights at the Pink Pony, a steak house saloon in the heart of Scottsdale. The term "legendary" is used too freely and many times inappropriately. For the Pony, it fits.
Long-time owner Charlie Briley, a Kentucky native who never totally lost his southern accent nor his courtly manners, had been one of the driving forces behind baseball coming to Arizona and the building of the original Scottsdale Stadium. When it was razed in 1992 and replaced by the current structure, Charlie had dibs on the old home plate and installed it in a case on the wall of his restaurant.
He was close friends with Hall of Fame pitcher Dizzy Dean, who brought his baseball pals to the Pony in its early days. Most of them never left and were joined by legions of players, managers, executives, writers, broadcasters and fans.
It became a Cooperstown West, one night hosting five members of the Hall of Fame. I can't remember exactly who they were, but a guess would be Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, Mickey Mantle, Willie McCovey and Joe Cronin. But it could have been Ferguson Jenkins, Orlando Cepeda, Ted Williams, Ernie Banks and Joe Morgan. You get the idea.
Gene Autry, the owner of the Angels and an original singing cowboy of television and movies, had his own dedicated booth at the Pony. The Cowboy was never shy about downing a drink [and] about being honest. One night he unsteadily approached the table of Bill Rigney, the former manager of the Giants and the Angels' manager their first two years of their existence.
"The biggest mistake I ever made was firing you," Autry said. Rigney, a Pony regular and one of the game's great raconteurs, nodded in agreement.
"I told you that the day you did it," Rigney said with a laugh. Autry smiled and bought a round for Rigney's table, which probably included premier
baseball writers Roger Angell and Ron Fimrite, broadcaster Lon Simmons and former Giants executive and national league president Chub Feeney.
The Pony was not only a place for bonhomie, it also served as an office annex for club GMs. Giants GM Spec Richardson pulled off more than one deal while at the Pony. Cell phones were several years in the future, so Richardson and other execs used the pay phone to negotiate their deals. If there is a Hall of Fame for phone booths, that one belongs.
Through his baseball connections Briley assembled a collection of World Series bats, which he proudly displayed behind the bar. In addition, the walls were decorated with caricatures of patrons, many of the drawings the work of Charlie's wife, Gwen. It was considered an honor to have Gwen's version of your mug on the wall.
It was an honor for Gwen to draw your portrait. David make the cut.
Many portraits on the wall were drawn by Disney artist Don Barkley.
Few of Briley's spring customers were casual patrons. Most of them secured reservations five or six nights a week. One -- I believe it was former Giants coach and manager Dave Bristol -- phoned ahead on nights to say he wasn't coming.
When he managed the Oakland A's, Billy Martin was a regular and you never wanted to leave before he did. You might miss something, like hearing a Casey Stengel story, seeing Billy take Gwen for a twirl around the makeshift dance floor, or ducking while he launched a haymaker at a patron who said something Billy didn't like. I witnessed them all.
Martin was instrumental in the A's hiring of Mickey Morabito in 1980, to be the A's director of travel. The two had been pals when they worked for the Yankees. Making his first trip to Arizona, Morabito learned about the Pony quickly.
"When I was picked up at the airport, it was still afternoon and I figured they would take me to the ballpark and show me my office," Morabito recalled years later.
"Instead I was taken straight to the Pink Pony. There was Billy and the coaching staff having a 'meeting' in one of the booths."

By the time Briley died in 2001, the baseball crowd, particularly the younger
members, had begun shifting spring allegiances to Don & Charlie's about a mile northeast of the Pony. It is a bustling establishment with plenty of baseball memorabilia on the walls and celebrities in the seats. Although it has become a "must do" on every spring junket, for me it never quite replaced the Pink Pony.
Owner Gwen Briley spent half of her life in the Scottsdale steakhouse.
New Yorker
writer Roger Angell called the Pink Pony "the best baseball restaurant
in the land."
Gwen Briley hung onto the Pony for a few years but it has since changed hands twice and been remodeled. There is nothing wrong with its current incarnation, except it's not The Pony.
