Who Do You Want To Be?
By Tiffany Kallam, Detention Center Coordinator

Last Thursday one of my students told me he was going home. He handed me this drawing. He spoke about his time in the class, looked at every fellow classmate and thanked them for their patience and peer support. They all nodded in solidarity with their classmate.  Having unfolded the paper by this time, I began to read its inscription.  When he addressed me, I was doing all I could to hold back tears.   Touched. Overjoyed.  In a shaky voice he said, "And thank you Ms. Kallam, for helping me see that I am not a pawn. I am a king."
Day Of Giving 2015
Reading Connections recently participated in ProLiteracy's Day of Giving 2015 as part of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. We asked members of the community to donate $25 in honor of our 25th year, and the campaign was a wonderful success! We raised a total of $3,150 from 34 donors over the course of only one week, and our campaign was featured on WFMY's Good Morning Show and on the National Coalition for Literacy's blog! Wow!

Thank you so much for the incredible generosity. We are so grateful for the community support we have received!!

Staff Changes
Best Wishes, Amanda!

We are sad to announce the resignation of Amanda Mbuvi, Greensboro ABE Coordinator. She recently moved on to a new opportunity, and we wish her much success!

Kiara Coulman  is our new full time Greensboro ABE Coordinator. Many of you worked with  Kiara  in her previous capacity as an AmeriCorps member, working with both the ABE and ESOL programs. Kiara has most recently served as Intake Coordinator in which she welcomed new students to the agency. We are excited for the support she will bring to our ABE Program!

We welcom e Lydia Davis as our new High Point ABE Coordinator!  Lydia has been a part of the Reading Connections family for the last two years. She started in 2013 as the Health Literacy AmeriCorps member, moved to Volunteer Services Coordinator in 2014, and will now also be fulfilling the role of ABE Coordinator in High Point.  We are excited to have her continue being a part of Reading Connections!

Sian Erskine is our New Student Coordinator and Career Coach in the Greensboro office. She has been a part of Reading Connections for the past five years, joining the agency as a tutor, teaching a STAR class, and most recently serving as the High Point ABE Coordinator. She will be taking on a new role working to place our students into jobs or onto further schooling when they are ready to leave us and move forward. She is looking forward to getting to know more students and helping them create a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Thanks To The Long Time Tutors!

Wow. When we decided to look into how many tutors have been with us for more than three years we were blown away by the number...there are more than fifty!!! Obviously, we needed to do something to show our gratitude, so we hosted a tea party in their honor.

The event was held at the Kathleen Clay Edwards branch of the Greensboro Library on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2015. You tutors are busy people, so we were happy to see those who were able to attend, but missed you others as well.

Amid sweet snacks and coffee poured into cups that sat on doilies, tutors shared their stories of when they first joined Reading Connections. Each one was asked to say what they would tell a new tutor today, as they begin with their first student. One said, "Remember to be open-minded." Another said, "You will learn more from your student than you ever expected," and the room became full of heads nodding in agreement.

"We couldn't do what we do without you!" Those were the words from the mouth of our executive director, Jenny Gore, as she warmly thanked the tutors for their very existence. One by one each tutor came to the front of the room and received a certificate acknowledging their long time of service with Reading Connections. A hearty round of applause was given to all. Back at their seats the tutors also received a gift certificate for Ed McKay's Used Books.  We hope that a good time was had by all.
