Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
|
This morning during kabbalat Shabbat, I asked our students which sin they thought was worse: the sin of the generation of Noach or that ofMigdal Bavel? In Noach's time, the people behaved so badly that Hashem felt He had no choice but to destroy all of them, with the exception of one family. With Migdal Bavel, on
|
|
the other hand, the punishment was simply that people would have a harder time understanding one another. The students answered, and I concur, that the sin of Noach's generation was worse because at least in the case of Migdal Bavel, the people were unified and working together. This is reflected in the relative severity of the punishments Hashem enacted in each case. What do we learn from this? Kochenu b'achduteinu - that our strength is in our unity.
As we all know, this was another very difficult and painful week in Eretz Yisrael and many of us here feel powerless to help. Here in school, we have been saying tehillim each morning, we have started a clothing drive for lone soldiers, and we are sharing many community events that are being organized in support of the people of Israel (see sidebar). But still, it is difficult to feel that we can make a meaningful difference here while our family in Israel is being targeted by terrorists. That said, we should not discount the importance of unity and of expressing support. Kochenu b'achduteinu - we can help give our brothers and sisters strength by maintaining our unity and showing our solidarity. We are strongest when we recognize that, despite our differences, we are one unified people, Am Yisrael.
Unity despite differences is one of the most powerful aspects of community. As a community, we go through sad times, difficult times, exciting times, and happy times and we go through these times together. One of those happy times is coming up for our BPY community this Sunday when we will celebrate the purchase of our home with our long awaited Chanukat Habayit. I look forward to greeting every one of you on Sunday and to celebrating our communal home together!
May we continue to share smachot and may all of Am Yisrael enjoy happiness, celebration, and freedom from danger.
Shabbat Shalom, Rav Tomer Ronen

A Parenting Paradigm Shift: Part I
by Stanley Fischman
|
Would you like to try a revolutionary approach to parenting? Follow the advice of parenting expert and life coach Kim Giles as she reviews her favorite parenting book, The Conscious Parent by Shefali Tsabary. Dr. Giles recommends that when confronting challenging or rebellious children, consider three pieces of advice:
|
|
See your parenting job in a new way
Don't try to control; instead work to connect with your child
Work on being more conscious, less scared and more loving
|
Parshat Hashavua Chevrutah Learning Begins! |
One of the most special times of the week is our Friday
parshat hashavuah chevruta learning sessions when first through fifth graders learn together across the grades - older children with younger ones. Beginning today, all elementary school students will bring home a
parsha sheet each week - please use them as a basis for Shabbat table discussions and encourage your children to share
divrei Torah. Please sign the sheets and send them back in on Mondays.

We celebrated Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan earlier this week with a beautiful communal Hallel (grades one through eight together) followed by a moving and heartfelt Shir Hama'alot for the safety of our brothers and sisters in Israel. Chodesh Tov -- may this month be filled with health, happiness and peace for all of Am Yisrael!
A special thank you to the BPYPTO and all the BPY parents for the delicious staff appreciation breakfast they provided for Rosh Chodesh!

Assemblyman Tim Eustace's Visit to BPY |
On Thursday morning, we had a special visit from Assemblyman Tim Eustace who toured our school and visited some of our classes. Kindergartners presented Assemblyman Eustace with a special thank you for his commitment to keeping all the students of New Jersey safe and seventh graders heard from him about the role of state government. Assemblyman Eustace also reminded us about the importance of voting and that everyone's vote counts. In fact, he shared that he won one election by only 35 votes! Thank you Assemblyman Eustace for spending your morning with us.

In honor of Parshat Noach, elementary school students learned all about healthy eating with Coach Gila Guzman of Main Asset Health. They sampled a rainbow of healthy foods and learned how healthy eating habits keep their bodies and minds strong and healthy. Thank you Coach Gila! A tremendous THANK YOU to our generous program sponsors, the nutrition committee, the BPYPTO, and all the parent volunteers who helped bring this program to BPY! |
Students across the grades learned about Columbus Day in different age appropriate ways:
Pre-K B discussed who Christopher
Columbus
was and all about his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. They learned that his 3 sailboats were called Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria and then the children experimented with different shapes of sails (square, triangle, and circle). They predicted which shape they thought would sail and balance the best!
Meanwhile, 3C read Encounter" by Jane Yolen which is
the story of Columbus' arrival to the New World, told from a Taino Indian perspective.

Afternoon Adventures Trimester I |
Our first week of Afternoon Adventures got off to a great start!
|
Today, when my daughter came home from school, she ran into the house jumping up and down with excitement. "Mommy, I have my first homework!!! Today Rav Ronen said we have homework to learn Torah with our parents!!"
|
|
She couldn't contain her excitement, so we sat down right away opened up the first page of Breishit and spent the next 20 minutes learning the first perek of the parsha. We then continued our discussion with the many questions that she had about the story.
I just wanted to share this with you and thank you for this special gift I had today - a child so eager to learn Torah and do her "homework." We could not be happier with the excitement and joy our daughter has for school and for the amazing nurturing teachers we are so lucky to have...
