President's Message: |
Dear Members,
Michigan is taking on the Repositioning Initiative with full force and it has sparked many lively conversations through town halls, board meetings, and informal get-togethers. The mantra behind it is that it is critical we make some significant changes to the organization to reflect a changing profession and changing membership. National has identified a framework - 10 priority areas that are broken and need fixing. You can find the list here. The top three priorities shift from chapter to chapter - rightly reflecting our diverse membership! - but it's not necessary for all members to agree on the top three, it's only necessary that the chapters and members discuss the organization and profession and come up with actions both short-term and long-term that are going to make the AIA more relevant. Please contact me, Cathy Mosley, or your local chapter leadership to get involved.
At the AIAMI board level, I have charged the board with reviewing our committees and evaluating their relevance; with suggesting sun-setting committees that are not currently relevant; with determining what is missing or underrepresented; and finally to charge committees with quick wins a long term actions, using our strategic plan, repositioning and the framework as the guide throughout. For example, one of priority areas of Repositioning is "Engaging Emerging Professionals". AIA Michigan's focus will be to actively search out emerging professionals to include on committees throughout the organization instead of only having a specific Emerging Professionals committee.
The Repositioning page on the AIA website has all the videos available which were presented at grassroots. While I would encourage everyone to view the videos, they are rather lengthy. Fortunately for those of you pressed for time, the Huron Valley chapter has made a condensed version with a written narrative which will be available shortly to all our members.
Thank you to everyone who has participated to date in this conversation at the national, state and/or local level - your involvement is critical to us moving forward through a mixture of introspection and bold actions. For those of you who haven't yet participated, please consider adding your voice and ideas. We are better together!

Executive Director's Message: | 
Hello and Happy end-of-May!!
May has been quite an exciting month! I am very happy to officially be the Executive Director of AIA Michigan and look forward to working with our members and our professional affililate organizations in my (officially) new role!
Lots of event preparations are happening in the office this month but I am still visiting many of the state chapters for their Repositioning town hall meetings and other events. I will be in Grand Rapids June 6th for the next AIA Michigan Board Meeting and I would love to talk with members in person if you plan on being there!
Don't forget all the great events coming up: you can register for the Educational Facilities and Design Awards events and registration for the Mid Summer Conference on Mackinac Island will mailed out next week. And it may be coming up next weekend, but you still have time to register for the A.R.E. Weekend Seminar in Grand Rapids! |
| Chapter Focus: AIA Grand Rapids |
The AIA Grand Rapids chapter is a busy and active chapter and a central hub of activity on the west side of the state. In line with the recent initiatives to promote healthy lifestyle changes, the chapter just completed "Active Commute Week," a challenge that promotes healthy competition among companies in the area through individual use of active modes of transportation.
AIA Grand Rapids is one of the few chapters with a scholarship program. Each year the chapter grants one student a $1,000 scholarship to assist the student in continuing his/her education. This year's winner, Alyssa Hahn, is a University of Michigan graduate currently working on her Masters of Architecture and Certificate of Historical Preservation at the Art Institute in Chicago.
The chapter also has upcoming events, including the Golf Club outing at the Thornapple Pointe golf course on Tuesday, June 4th. For more information about the chapter and its events, please visit their website. |

Greg Metz, AIA is a lifetime Grand Rapidian, who graduated with his architecture degree from the University of Detroit in 1991. After graduation he worked for a variety of firms until he co-founded Lott3Metz Architecture, with Ted Lott, AIA in 2003. His firm specializes in urban architecture, planning and rabble rousing. He also serves on several boards and committees in Grand Rapids and the State and he is the leader of his son's elementary school Cub Scout Pack. He lives in East Grand Rapids with his wife, Jennifer, and their three young children. |

Ellen Rotter, Assoc. AIA is the new Intern Architect at NSA Architects Engineers Planners and can now be reached at [email protected].
Hobbs + Black Associates, Inc. has received the IIDA Michigan Interior Design Excellence Award. The firm's the Oakwood Heritage Bone and Joint Institute, an expansion and addition to the Oakwood Heritage Hospital in Taylor, MI, won for best interior design in the Healthcare category.

Mike Kirk, AIA, Gene Carroll, AIA and Joel Smith, AIA of Neumann/Smith Architecture have joined with Beverly Hannah Jones, AIA of Hannah & Associates to form a joint-venture firm Hannah-Neumann/Smith, which will be headquartered in the historic Wright-Kay building.
Rossetti is moving its heaquarters to the Federal Reserve Building, a historic building in downtown Detroit. Rossetti will begin occupying the 4th floor in July and will also be redesigning the building. To read the full article about the downtown migration, click here.
This month Damian Farrell, AIA will be talking with exciting guests in his "Damian on Design" segment in the Lucy Ann Lance Show. This month's guests include: John Kotarski, commissioner at Ann Arbor Public Art Commission, who will discuss the DIA's Inside Out exhibition in Ann Arbor; Detroit Free Presswriter and author, John Gallagher, will discuss Detroit architecture; and Susan Bandes will discuss the East Lansing MODERN exhibition (April 18-Aug. 18). Tune into the Lucy Ann Lance show every Saturday at 11:10am on WLBY, 1290AM for "Damian on Design". |
