Our current exhibit, Visas to Freedom: Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the Refugees of World War II , was featured this week on the Portuguese television show "Hora dos Portugueses (Diario)" (The Portuguese Hour Daily). The exhibit celebrates the courageous actions of Holocaust rescuer Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul General stationed in Bordeaux, France in 1940. His government had issued strict orders to all its diplomats to deny visas to Jews and other refugees seeking to escape German-occupied Europe through Portugal. Sousa Mendes defied these orders and issued life-saving Portuguese visas to thousands and thousands of people in May and June of 1940. Exhibit runs through March 1.

Vancouver's King David High School Visits LAMOTH

This week we welcomed students from King David High School in Vancouver, British Columbia, visiting LAMOTH for the first time. The school visited LAMOTH because they wanted their students to learn about the Holocaust during their field trip to Los Angeles. A customized tour allowed  students to choose either to do self-guided tours with LAMOTH's audio guides or tour the Museum with docent and child survivor Harry Davids. After touring the galleries, the students had the opportunity to listen to a Holocaust survivor speaker firsthand.
