In Memory of Joanna Hodges |
I studied piano with Joanna Hodges for ten years at her piano studio in Long Beach, California. Ms. Hodges was inspiring as a teacher, and was my mentor on my unexpected journey in becoming a piano teacher, almost 23 years ago. I was honored to become her assistant teacher in Vancouver, where I taught for 4 years.
When I visited Joanna in late December, I wrote a Facebook post that she was ill. I received touching emails and Facebook messages from her California, Washington, and summer seminar students, now living around the world. I was able to share those messages with her and she was so proud to hear about each person's success in their career, music, and family life. She was very pleased to hear about the achievement and success of the students from my studio.
We can continue to honor her by passing along the wonderful gifts that she shared with through our performances and teaching. I have collaborated with a friend and colleague, Leonne Lewis, to create a tribute that will be featured in the Music Teacher's Association of California's journal in April 2016.
Thank you Joanna, for your love and support, in believing in each and every one of us and helping us to succeed. You brought music into our lives, along with culture, discipline, determination, competition, and camaraderie. Your dedication to music and the art of teaching will continue to inspire others across the world. Your musical light will always shine brightly. In conclusion, I'd like to leave you with a bit of wisdom that Joanna gave to me before I returned to California to start up my own studios: She told me, "You must create your own world of music around you, wherever you are."
