Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day. Kindness Starts Here.
Wednesday, February 24, 2016

An annual event celebrated in many countries around the world, Pink Shirt Day on February 24th, encourages people to talk about bullying and take action against it. Bullying is a problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and over the Internet. On Pink Shirt Day, you are encouraged to wear something pink to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere.

It is important that victims of bullying know they are not alone and there is help and support available. Wearing a pink shirt on this day sends a strong message that others care. Often, the simple act of wearing a shirt can start conversations - conversations can be a big step towards healing and helping!

In Global Leadership classes Secondary students have been talking about Kindness since January and recently started an Anti-Bullying unit that will carry out through April 1st. Pink Shirt Day is just one of many activities we have planned for the quarter. The next big event will be March 8th. On this day Grade 11 and 12 students are leading a Kindness Extravaganza.

For more about the Story of Pink Shirt Day please watch these videos: Story of Pink Shirt Day #1 and #2.

The dress code for this day includes wearing something pink - a pink shirt, pink accessories or pink pants, etc. Students can wear clean jean pants in addition to their pink shirt. If a student is not participating they will need to wear their PASB school uniform.

International Festival
ELEMENTARY INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The Elementary International Festival is multi disciplinary learning experience. It increases "international mindedness" and facilitate global responsibility in accordance with PASB's core values and beliefs. To develop this goal, each grade level studies a country in order to learn about its history, culture (Art, PE, Music), economy, geography, and to celebrate its unique customs and traditions.

Educational Objectives:
  • Increase student awareness of Salvador culture within a world community;
  • Identify differences and similarities in cultures;
  • Enrich cultural awareness by learning about other ways of living and other ways of doing things;
  • Engage students in school-wide project based learning;
  • Increase social and self-awareness through community involvement;
  • Develop greater respect for differences among cultures.
Countries represented on this year's Festival:

South Africa
Grade 1
Japan
Grade 2
Guatemala
Grade 3
England
Grade 4
United States of America
Grade 5

The PTA is getting into the spirit of international festival and will be hosting a barraca highlighting the international nature of our school, the pupils and teachers that come from outside Brazil. If you are an international parent, we would love your assistance as we are keen to focus on all the different nations that make up PASB and celebrate this with food, costumes and art. Please email and introduce yourself at [email protected].

The stand for each country will open at 11:00 after the Pre-K 4 presentation.

Digital Citizenship Tips
Do you worry about the apps your child is using on their digital device? This guide provides a simple list of popular apps that most students are using and gives a simple thumbs up or down for a quick understanding.

This guide is helpful even without an understanding of the English language. Take a look at the picture icon of the app to see if it is on your child's digital device. If the app shows thumbs up, it should be ok for your student that is over 13 years old. Remember, always talk to your child about keeping personal information private on social media. Even safe apps can become unsafe if a student is not being a good digital citizen.

Check out the app guide here.

Next week we will provide tips on how to teach your student to be good digital citizen.
