Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
The focus of this week's parsha, Tetzaveh, is the clothing of the kohanim and the kohen gadol. The parsha goes into a lot of detail about exactly what the various garments look like, what they are made out of, their colors, embellishments, etc. Why do all of these details matter so much?

Every morning, we say the bracha: "Baruch ata Hashem....malbish arumim (who clothes the unclothed)." What are we thanking Hashem for with this bracha? The simple answer is that we are thanking Him

for providing us with clothing (something that we know not everyone in the world is blessed to have).

However, this week's parsha  gives us some more insight into this  bracha. Hashem differentiated people from animals by giving humans an internal sense of propriety and tzniut. To an animal, clothing doesn't make any difference but human beings feel uncomfortable if they are not dressed appropriately for different situations. We become embarrassed when we feel that we are not properly attired. The bracha is therefore also thanking Hashem for giving us that internal sense of tzniut and propriety that separates us from animals.

Beyond that, Hashem chose us, Am Yisrael, to be His "mamlechet kohanim" and " goy kadosh ," His own priestly and holy nation. What we learn from the parsha's focus on the details of the clothing of the kohanim is that clothing isn't just something to keep us protected from the elements, nor is it simply something to separate people from animals. Rather, in making us His holy people, Hashem gave each one of us an elevated sense of kavod, respect, for those around us and, just as importantly, for ourselves. It is therefore our responsibility to reflect this kavod, both inwardly and outwardly, in the way we present ourselves, to others and to ourselves.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen

First Graders Visit the Montclair Art Museum and the Jewish Home at Rockleigh
This week our first graders got to enjoy a double field trip, with stops at both the  Montclair Art Museum  to study portraiture and create their own, and t he Jewish Home  at Rockleigh to sing and bring joy to the residents there. What an amazing day, full of learning and chesed!

President's Day
Earlier this week, we celebrated President's Day! In honor of the holiday, the children in Gan Rina shared what they would do if they were President:
The students of Gan Ilanot studied George Washington and learned a song to help them remember the names of all of our US presidents. They even painted their own "presidential portraits"!

BPY Alumni Pride
Congratulations to BPY alumni Odelia Fried '14 and Joey Yudelson '14 on on their award-winning performances during this week's SAR High School 4th Annual Poetry Slam. Odelia and Joey were among 10 finalists selected from 80 performers. Kol Hakavod!

Around BPY Early Childhood
Gan Parparim kicked off their transportation unit by painting with cars!

Gan Kochavim's hospital is open for business and our future doctors are taking excellent care of their patients!

Around BPY Elementary School
First graders began their school study unit in social studies. They  brainstormed questions that they have about BPY and discussed ways that they could find the answers. Some of their questions had to do with the inside of the building so they learned about maps and then had an opportunity to work with partners to study maps of the inside of BPY. Next week, they will continue their investigation and try to find some more answers (and questions)!

Morah Hemda's second graders have been having a blast learning new Hebrew vocabulary through song and dance. Take a look at their routines!

Around BPY Junior High
Seventh graders have been learning about cellular transportation by using eggs as models. After chemically removing the outer shells using vinegar, students placed their eggs in water or corn syrup to mimic different environments. Then they soaked their eggs in a red solution to see if the dye was able to penetrate the membranes. Always up for some fun, Mr. Kogut gave his students the opportunity to get creative when opening their eggs to see if the dye had entered. Check out a couple of their resulting eggs-plosions, captured here in slow motion...
Last week, eighth graders were treated to a special guest lecturer on the topic of "US Imperialism and the Spanish American War." One of their own classmates researched this topic in depth so Morah Debbie invited him to take her place (and her Smartboard) for the day so he could share what he learned, answer questions, and lead the class discussion. Highlights included exploring the definition of imperialism, US isolationism, yellow journalism, and the Cuban conflict. The class concluded with a debate about whether imperialism was good or bad.
