February 2016
KASD Superintendent Dear KASD Families and Friends,

Earlier this month, River View Middle School and Kaukauna High School each hosted two days of the nationally-recognized Challenge Day workshops for students. The Challenge Day program is designed to build and strengthen student connections and empathy for others in schools and in the community.  The responses from students, staff and community members have been overwhelmingly positive.

The KHS musical AIDA was another highlight for the month. This timeless love story was exceptionally produced and presented by the KHS Fine Arts Departments; it's another excellent example of a school community coming together and creating opportunities for our students to excel. BRAVO AIDA!

Also in the past month, Kaukauna Area School District joined several area schools and community organizations as a proud sponsor of the African Heritage Emerging Student Leaders Institute. Students and staff have attended workshops and leadership forums to learn and to lead a journey on a continuous path for equity and opportunities for all.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I recently had the opportunity to spend nearly a full day visiting our elementary schools. I was so impressed and proud of our students and staff's engagement in learning. I left each building thinking that the District's hard work is paying off. Thank you for your continuous support of Kaukauna Area School District.

Be the Change!
In an effort to promote mutual respect and acceptance throughout our school and community, the Ka ukauna Area School District hosted nationally-recognized Challenge Day workshops at Kaukauna High School and River View Middle School during the first week of February.

The International Challenge Day program was designed to help build connection and empathy among students by breaking down barriers that separate them, while promoting understanding, acceptance and respect.

While we received very positive feedback about the workshop days, the program serves a larger purpose, in extending the teachings of those workshops into our every day lives at our schools as part of the "Be the Change" movement.

As part of Challenge Days, students made the commitment to "Be the Change," a clear and positive affirmation that in order to change the world around us, we need to "walk the walk." Students pledged to perform at least one intentional, positive act of "change" per day, serving as inspiration, inclusion and support to those around them.

If you want to learn more about Challenge Day and about the Be the Change movement, please visit the Challenge Day website

KASD Sponsors African Heritage Emerging Student Leaders Institute
On Thursday, February 18, African Heritage, Inc. hosted the African Heritage Emerging Student Leaders Institute at Liberty Hall in Appleton.

This one-day event, sponsored in part by Kaukauna Area School District, served as a leadership opportunity for African-American high school and college students and K-12 teachers and administrators. The institute was created to promote higher education, career exploration and job opportunities for students.

Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Chandra Gill, the African Heritage Emerging Student Leaders Institute gave students the opportunity to be involved in culturally-relevant learning experiences, empowering them to be successful at school, at home and within their communities.
