Up-to-date info to help in your work with crime victims with developmental disabilities

Mid-Winter Greetings!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and also hosts National Crime Victims' Rights Week.  If what you are doing to recognize either of these designations
might be of interest to your 1200+ colleagues on this VTrail listserv, shoot me an email with the details.

Here in Aurora we are sponsoring a training in late April that features our colleagues from the Massachusetts Building Partnerships of the Protection of Persons with Disabilities Initiative who will offer suggestions, tools, and guidance as we in Colorado look to implement mandatory reporting of crimes against all people with developmental disabilities on July 1.  If you would like information on this no-cost training and did not receive our Save the Date email notice about it earlier this month, let me know and I will gladly add you to the list to receive the registration invitation early next month.

Resource Guide: Human Trafficking
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has developed the Faces of Human Trafficking Resource Guide to raise public awareness of human trafficking, the many forms it can take, and the important role that everyone can play in identifying and serving victims. This new multidisciplinary resource includes a nine-part video series (also available with Spanish subtitles), a discussion guide, four fact sheets, and four posters. Access these  tools and more by visiting the online resource
guide. While this entire resource does not relate specifically to victims with developmental disabilities, the thirdvideo references the Men of Atalissa (IA) who did not disclose their abuse when asked and who, for 35 years, worked 40hrs/wk in return for $65/month salary... The faces of human trafficking include people with developmental disabilities!

Investigating Sexual Assault Against People with Disabilities: Techniques for Effective Communication
In this installment of its training bulletin series on working with victims with disabilities, Ending Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) staff describe techniques to effectively communicate with a victim who has any disability that may impact his or her ability to understand you, or your ability to understand the victim. Editor's note - EVAWI's five previously-published bulletins in this series on working with victims with disabilities were featured in last month's VTrail.

Fundamentals Of Victims' Rights: A Summary of 12 Common Victims' Rights
This bulletin from the National Crime Victim Law Institute summarizes twelve common victims' rights. Disability or not, these rights remain.

This issue of Frontline Initiative  provides background information for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) exploring trauma-informed care. Anyone can experience trauma and those experiences can have long-term consequences. Trauma-informed care acknowledges the lasting impact that traumatic experiences can have on people's lives and affirms how those past experiences can impact a person's present actions. Trauma-informed care takes these experiences into account and provides support that helps prevent further crises. Published by the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) and the Institute's Research and Training Center on Community Living (RTC).
National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) will be observed April 10-16, 2016. The Theme Video and artwork are now available online to support the week-long event.

Webinar --  People with Disabilities in the Criminal Justice System: Promising Legislation for Statewide Reforms
February 25th, 1:30 PM - 3:00PM EST
Presenters:
Leigh Ann Davis, Program Manager, NCCJD
Heather Sachs, Vice President of Advocacy and Public Policy, National Down Syndrome Society
Patti Saylor, Owner, Health Link LLC
Darla Stuart, Executive Director, The Arc of Aurora
Diana Goldberg, Executive Director, SungateKids
Carole O'Shea, Supervisor Victim Advocate, Aurora Police Department

Hear the stories that created two statewide movements to pass legislation impacting people with disabilities in the criminal justice system. Over the past two years, NCCJD has been compiling a database of such legislation in order to help criminal justice and disability professionals understand this issue from a national viewpoint and get an idea of what type of legislation is being passed and why. A brief overview of current findings will be discussed by NCCJD's Program Manager. Ms. Sachs and Ms. Saylor will highlight legislation passed in their home state of Maryland inspired by Ethan Saylor's death to establish a program to effectively train people with disabilities to meaningfully participate in law enforcement trainings. The Colorado team will discuss their collaborative role in successfully passing state legislation that allows crime victims with disabilities to have access to hearsay exception in order to ensure their full participation in the justice process. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to learn how to make changes in your state! Register here.
